Marty says we finish no better than 4th
Unless we catch lightning in a bottle with the young pitchers as we did in 99.
I listened to an interview with TSN about the Reese and Young comments. http://mfile.akamai.com/3310/rm/sportnws.download.akamai.com/3310/i/media/audio/2/20020223/6880.ram That's the link it is a good listen if you have 10 minutes. |

Marty also said that there was NO WAY the Reds would acquire Junior.
Typical Tar Heel. Nothing but a bag of hot air. |

Unless the Reds find better starting pitching, much better, Marty's right.

What the hell does Marty know? For a Reds broadcaster, he doesn't have a clue what the inside information is going on in the organization.

LOL Krusty, I kind of got that feeling listening to the interview. Most if not all the things he said were open ended........

Geez! You put a guy in the HOF, and the next thing you know, he thinks he's Peter Gammons. Who listens to guys with "puffy hair" anyway?
We were predicted to finish no better than 4th going into 1999 also. If certain players click, and we stay healthy, then we can be competitive this year. Winning is a team effort.

I agree that 4th place is a reasonable pick. I really look for the Reds to be about a .500 team this year, but COULD the Reds contend, win about 90-95 games or so? I think so. Which team looks stronger going into spring training, this team or the 1999 Reds? The 1999 Reds appeared to have stronger starting piching with Harnisch and Neagle, but the 2002 Reds otherwise appear to be a stronger team on paper-problem is they play the games on grass and turf, not paper.

Things have to go like they did in 99 to contend. No injuries (Boone, Larkin, Jr., Casey)and a few career years(Boone, Casey, & starting RF). Most important the starting pitching needs to catch fire. I think Etherton & Haynes may surprise but will that be enough?
That is a big list that all has to go right. I think 4th is a fair guess. |

I would take Marty over Gammons anyday! Fourth place is about right with this pitching staff.

Marty is as close to above reproach as anyone associated with this organization. As I've said on this board before, he's more responsible for me being a fan than any one particular player.
I think his comments might be a bit on the inflammatory side, though, about the 4th place finish. He's probably right, but it's by no means assured.

Marty is right 98% of the time. This just isn't one of those times. Reds finish either 1st or 2nd. Bank it!
