RedsZone Hall of Fame - Right Fielders

Vote for all RIGHT FIELDERS you believe should be in the Hall of Fame. This is a multiple-choice poll so you're allowed to vote for more than one player.

We'll stick with the tier system that gives the older players a little bit better shot at election. In the efforts of encouraging everybody to vote, but also maintaining a somewhat level playing field for all eligible candidates, this is the tier system for support needed ...

19th century (i.e. pre 1903): Need 2/5 support
Early Modern (roughly 1903-1945): Need 1/2 support
Integration (roughly 1945-1970): Need 5/8 support
Post Integration (roughly 1970-present): Need 2/3 support

The charts below are win shares data for all candidates. In order from left to right, the columns are career win shares, five-year peak win shares, win shares per 162 games, win shares during a player's top season and the predominant era each player played in (for purposes of the tier voting system). Happy voting!

Code:
Player Career WS Peak WS WS per 162 Top Season Era
Hank Aaron 643 183 31.58 41 Integration

Opps! I inadvertently failed to vote for Clemente. Boss, can you please correct my oversight?
I otherwise voted for Aaron, Crawford, Heilmann, Jackson, Kaline, Ott, Robinson, Ruth, Slaughter, Waner and Winfield. I strongly considered voting for Flick, Keeler and Kelly, but finally did not do so.

Re: RedsZone Hall of Fame - Right Fielders

All right, who didn't vote for Babe Ruth?

Let me stump for two old-timers here:

King Kelly was, arguably, the biggest star of the 1800s. It comes down to him or Cap Anson. The man helped make the game. IMO, the HOF would have a huge, gaping hole without him in there. It's like trying to talk about American history and skipping over Ben Franklin.

Sam Rice lost time to WWI and had less than 1,000 ABs prior to age 29 thanks to that and to folks not thinking a little guy like him could play the game. He had to battle his way in the majors and he wound up with 2,987 hits. Personally I consider him to have 3,006 career hits because I count the 19 he got in the postseason. He's the only player in baseball history who crosses over the 3,000-hit line if you count his postseason accomplishments (which, IMO, should be part and parcel of a player's career totals). He had no HR power, but he was a good doubles hitter and he was a triples machine. If ever a guy scratched and clawed his way into a HOF career, it was Sam Rice.

Re: RedsZone Hall of Fame - Right Fielders

A couple of these are generous (Flick, Klein), but I voted for Aaron, Clemente, Crawford, Flick, Heilmann, Jackson, Kaline, Keeler, Kelly, Klein (maybe I just got carried away in the k's), Ott, Robinson, Ruth, Waner & Winfield.

Sorry Mr. Slaughter, but I decided against it.

Re: RedsZone Hall of Fame - Right Fielders

Poll closes Tuesday afternoon so just a little bump for anyone who may have missed it ...

I will be getting the first part of the starting pitchers up in a few hours. There's well over 100 pitchers listed so I'm going to break it up into 3 polls. Trying to select as much as 50 guys in a list well over 100 deep is just asking for some bug-eyed voters

as of right now, Dave Winfield is not in. Something is wrong with that. He's about 1 or 2 votes shy. Same for King Kelly.

And it's absurd that these two guys wouldn't make it.

Re: RedsZone Hall of Fame - Right Fielders

I didn't originally vote for King Kelly, but admittingly my knowledge base for pretty much every player pre-1892 is seriously lacking. In fact, I imagine I'm much more familiar with Negro Leaguers than I am with the game in the 1870s/1880s, and that's not saying much at all. As M2 stated in an earlier post, King Kelly was pretty darn influential in shaping the game ... and that alone is Hall worthy, though I was a moron missed that on the first go-around.

Also, since most everyone I've seen who is at least semi-familiar with that time period would put Kelly in the Hall, I'll take the good word that he unquestionably belongs. Boss, if you get a chance, please add a vote for King Kelly and Willie Keeler for me as I'd like to make those additions before the poll closes (if not, no worries, I'll be sure to manually add them in when the poll closes). I don't know why I didn't vote for Keeler ... all I can think of is some lingering hangover from New Year's

Aaron, Clemente, Colavito, Crawford, Dawson, Evans, Heilmann, Jackson, Kaline, Keeler, Kelly, Ott, Parker, Rice, Robinson, Ruth, Thompson, Waner, Winfield.

I thought that Ruth, Aaron, Clemente, Robinson, Ott, Jackson, Kaline, and Kelly were the automatic choices.

Chuck Klein was an interesting possibility, but he became very mortal after leaving the cozy confines of the Baker Bowl. So I voted "nay" on Klein.

Klein was a Depression era Gavy Cravath

In 552 games at Baker Bowl, Cravath batted .307 with a .563 slugging percentage. In 669 games at all other parks, he hit .271 and slugged .413. Per 154 games played at Baker Bowl, he averaged 482 at bats, 81 runs, 148 hits, 35 doubles, 6 triples, and 26 homers. Elsewhere, he averaged 512, 66, 139, 25, 15, and 6, respectively.

Re: RedsZone Hall of Fame - Right Fielders

The final results ...

Code:
RedsZone Hall of Fame - Right Fielders

Player % of votes
Hank Aaron 97.62 percent
Roberto Clemente 95.24 percent
Sam Crawford 59.52 percent
Reggie Jackson 92.86 percent
Al Kaline 88.10 percent
Willie Keeler 47.62 percent
King Kelly 45.24 percent
Mel Ott 83.33 percent
Frank Robinson 92.86 percent
Babe Ruth 97.62 percent
Paul Waner 52.38 percent
Dave Winfield 66.67 percent
Up until this point, the position with the highest amount of players voted in was shortstop with 11 guys. Right field eclipsed that mark with RedsZone voters putting in 12 guys. Paul Waner was the last man in, making it with only one vote to spare. The two guys who are, IMO, the biggest slights are Harry Heilmann (35.71 percent) and Enos Slaughter (40.48 percent).
