Re: So who is left?

I have browsed through the last couple days of transactions and can make the following changes from that list:

Scott Hatteberg, dh - Signed with the Reds

Dan Wilson, c - He is retiring - here's the story - http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2159900

Felix Heredia, lhp - Signed a minor league contract with the Diamondbacks on Friday

Luis Lopez, 3b - Signed a minor league contract with the Orioles earlier this week

Larry Walker, of - announced he was retiring but there were some rumbles in later December he might consider returing for another year as a DH.

EDIT:

Here is a list from ESPN.com that is updated as of today:

Re: So who is left?

My Analysis:

Cheap, potential bounceback guys:
Erubiel Durazo, dh- Great player to sign to small, incentives based contract.
Richard Hidalgo, of- ditto
Juan Gonzalez, of- Only 1 AB last year but small chance he can rebound.
Sammy Sosa, of- Probably done but possibly lighting in a bottle.

Backup Backup Catchers if healthy:
Mike DeFelice, c- he's done

Infield Utility/Bench Help:
Dave Hansen, 1b- was an alright PHer
Greg Colbrunn, 1b- not too bad either
Rey Sanchez, ss- Not a bad last resort for a bench guy...solid glove.
Luis Lopez, 3b- Good roster spot filler........ in AAA
Mike Mordecai, 3b- probably done
Jose Offerman, 1b- OK Bench bat
Carlos Baerga, 3b- OK bench bat
Denny Hocking, of; (does IF too)- used to be like Freel but not anymore.

5th OF: (at best)
Gerald Williams of- He's probably done

4th OF:
Danny Bautista, of; (He retired but now he's strangely wanting to play)
Bobby Higginson, of- Maybe another chance of scenery will help him.

Off Limits
Roger Clemens, rhp- If he does play only a couple potential markets
Ugueth Urbina, rhp- in jail

Probably Retiring:
Tino Martinez, 1b- Not too bad but he's probably done.
B.J. Surhoff, of- ditto
Rafael Palmeiro, 1b- Will play but no one wants.

Starters:
Jamey Wright, rhp- Stay away.....
Ismael Valdez, rhp- Not too bad 5th starter for a small market team.
Jeff Weaver, rhp- Will be very expensive but could be a good #3 or bad #2.
Jose Lima, rhp- STAY away...he's done
Pedro Astacio, rhp- maybe a solid 5th starter for a hurting team
Kevin Brown, rhp- I doubt he'll bounce back but small gamble to try with.

Relievers:
Shigetoshi Hasegawa, rhp- Alright BP filler for someone desperate
Buddy Groom, lhp- probably done... another last resort kind of guy.
Jay Powell, rhp- too inconsistent and riddled by poor health
Chad Fox, rhp- He's done.
Scott Sullivan, rhp- Not bad.... pitched too much for us... Good for a MLC.
Jim Mecir, rhp- 35.... a really good good short reliever.
Paul Quantrill, rhp- 36 and getting worse every year....not good.
Cal Eldred, rhp- Decent when healthy but getting old.
Al Reyes, rhp- Really effective when healthy.
Jason Christiansen, lhp- Has been pretty ineffective for years.
Felix Heredia, lhp- Hurting.... is young and maybe could bounce back.
Shingo Takatsu, rhp- Was really good for the Sox but pretty old.
Brian Meadows, rhp- VERY mediocre reliever
Darren Dreifort, rhp- Not a bad mop up if healthy for some desperate team.

Re: So who is left?

I'm not interested in cluttering up the roster with more crap; here's to hoping the next move they make is to cut some deadweight, not add it.

Re: So who is left?

I don't quite know why, but most of the major media outlets seem to have missed the fact that Jamey Wright was signed to a minor league deal by the Giants.

Re: So who is left?

Wright actually isn't as bad as he's worked up to be. He's a 5th starter but he's not a very bad one. His era outside of Coors has been below 5 consistently since 2000.

He signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers on Feb 7 per his player page on ESPN.com. I looked earlier and couldn't find anything searching online that jumped out on him. It's gotten to the point where I start mixing up rumors with actual signings. Sosa is a good example as I thought he signed with the Nationals but that was just a rumor.

He will or he will retire. Those are about his only 2 options left.
