You can't say that if these guys make the 25 man roster they'd keep these ridiculous spring training-esque numbers. Tuffy Rhodes might b/c he's that damn weird, and that damn overrated, but hopefully Bailey would have the brains to put on a real number.

As for #21 finding a new home, thank god it doesn't say "Casey" anymore, and we'll get to realize the true potential (hopefully) of a lineup with Kearns, Griffey, Pena, and Dunn playing everyday.

Re: #21 Is Back

Homer would not have picked his number. IT was assigned to him. I would say in a few more years he will have his actual number he plans to have for his career on his back.

I thought I read somewhere that The equipment guy assigns numbers in spring training and if they make it, then they have a choice of available numbers. Even then it could change throughout their career.

Once they "make" the team they can vie for a number, as invitees they are assigned a number, usually the higher it is the less likely they'll make the team.

Once on the Red Wings Tomas Holmstrom wanted number 96 to commemerate the year he first got to the NHL, the coach ( crusty old Scotty Bowman, living legend) suggested he get #97 instead to commemerate the year that he would likely return to the minors.

Heck with Bucky Fn Dent, give him #83.

Save the good #'s like 7 for the players.

Vets will be allowed the choice most times, the assigning of numbers isn't completly fail safe, 30 is a traditional OF number, Griffey (both), Vince Coleman, Brian Hunter, Dave Martinez, Roberto Kelly...

Re: #21 Is Back

I'm of the opinion that coaches don't need uniform numbers, unless they are famous retired players who's name is associated with a particular number in the organization (Gullett = 35, etc) Most of the time they're wearing a jacket, anyway. And who looks on the program to figure out who the coach is based on his number?

Great, McCracken will think everyone wearing an old #30 Griffey uni will be rockin his number. That's just what we need...

Amusingly enough, it will be interesting to see how many people go out and replace the #30 for the new #3, or if they're too pissed off to shell out more money for Cincy's Favorite Son.
