Re: Pena traded for Arroyo

The more I think about it the more I see this as a "We're really trying!!" move much like the Milton deal last year..thankfully this one doesn't stick us with a horrible contract.

...or such a horrible pitcher. Arroyo is a considerable upgrade over Milton. All Milton had were his wins.

Re: Pena traded for Arroyo

Any trade that puts a 35 year old Scott Hattenburg into the regular lineup (even if only until he plays himself out of the lineup) is a bad idea.

Arroyo plus SH does not make the Reds a better team - now or in the long haul.

I'm thinking after Thursday that Carlos Pena's going to be a Red.

Just a hunch. Yeah, he might be Dave Revering, but he's probably better than Hatteburg.

You've been on Pena as a Red for a while now IIRC. What gives you the impression that it'll happen?

He's too expensive, 3 mill a year.

My guess is the reason why is because if the Reds constantly wait for the perfect trade they'll be headed down Devil Rays highway.

I buy into the notion that Pena probably will be worth more this summer, but that's not guaranteed and at some point the Reds need to start addressing the larger pitching problem. Fixing it is going to involve taking on some risk.

Are there other pitchers I'd have preferred to Arroyo?

Yes.

Would I rather have dealt Kearns and kept Pena?

Yes.

That said, I think the Reds moved in the right direction with this deal and I'm fairly confident Pena won't be winning any triple crowns any time soon.

Another Lefty? Don't think so.

Dan O'Brien, is that you?

This deal could go either way. Either Pena will flame out with the Red Sox, which I look for, or he becomes Sammy Sosa in Fenway. I honestly don't think very many pitchers could be successful playing in Coors Lite aka GABP.

If we can't get Choi or Shealy..Pena would be a nice option. Two straight years with an OPS over .800 and 45 homeruns in those two years - and he plays in a pitchers park.

Pena is not known for being scrappy.

I'll apply Yankees theory here, you can never have too many lefty bats, particularly in a park that favors LHBs.

I think it is pretty clear. The answer is panic. They saw a staff crumbling before the eyes and Krivsky felt like he had to do something, even if it doesn't further any long term plan.
