Travis Wood: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 9 K's in exhibition game vs Beloit
Very encouraging to see those 9 strikeouts in five innings.
Greetings from Sarasota! The temperature heated up on Monday and unfortunately for the Dragons so did the bats of the Beloit Snappers (Minnesota Twins). The Snappers made the 80 trip from Fort Myers worthwhile, with a pair of three run innings on route to beating the Dragons 10-1. Beloit pounded out 14 hits on the afternoon and Snappers pitching held the Dragons to just six. Left hander Travis Wood, the Reds second round selection in the 2005 draft was as good as advertised in the 5.0 innings he tossed. The southpaw allowed a solo home run in the third inning as one of just three hits he allowed on the day. Wood had Beloit hitters off kilter all afternoon long, striking out nine opposition hitters. Offensively, Ben Mummy picked up a double and scored the lone run for Dayton, coming home on a wild pitch in the seventh inning. Javier Rumbos added a double for the Dragons and Mike Griffin picked up a base hit, who struggled offensively. The Dragons are back in action on Tuesday afternoon against the Delmarva Shorebirds, the class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. More from Sarasota all week long as spring training wraps up. Opening Day is just 10 days away! Wish you were here! Mike Vander Wood "Voice of the Dragons" http://www.daytondragons.com/

I hope my 17 game Dragon package gets me a steady dose of Travis Wood.

Re: Travis Wood: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 9 K's in exhibition game vs Beloit
Does anyone know anything about this Johnny Cueto kid? Like age or height? I saw where he pitched in the GCL last year and had a solid bb/k rate and hr/9 rate. Also pitched a solid six innings with the Sarasota Reds. I read last week on Lancaster's blog that Cueto was a guy the Reds are pretty high on, yet we never hear anything on him.
Dayton wins 2-1 Greetings from Sarasota! The sun was out and pitching was on display as the Dragons and Delmarva Shore Birds, class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, squared off against each other on Tuesday afternoon at the Reds Minor League Complex. The Dragons picked up a 2-1 come from behind win with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit. The Shore Birds got on the board with a single tally in the top of the seventh inning before the Dragons rallied for two in the eighth. Chris Denove led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a base hit by Gerardo Cabrera. Mike Jones moved the runners along with a SAC bunt and then back to back RBI singles by Eric Eymann and Mike Griffin gave the Dragons the 2-1 lead. Johnny Cueto started the game for Dayton on the mound and tossed 5.0 shutout innings allowing three hits before giving way to Ranier Feliz who pitched the sixth and seventh. Feliz allowed one earned run in the 2.0 innings he worked. Tim Weiman picked up the win shutting down Delmarva in the final two innings. The Dragons are in Fort Myers on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Beloit Snappers, the class A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. Wish you were here! And I've been told that Wood barely cracks 90 on the gun, contrary to any hype-y scouting reports.. If he's going to gain velocity as he fills out, it could be scary.
Of course, if he doesn't gain velocity as he fills out, it could still be scary in the other direction. |

And if it is, I would submit that that would be the kind of normal variance typical in a talented teenage pitcher. |

Doc, if you use Woods numbers up to this point AND consider that he doesn't have a quality curveball yet, he has to be throwing some heat to have had the success at this point in his career. Yeah, his changeup is more advanced, but topping out at 90 with a good change doesn't do it.

Look, if the kid averaged a 93-94 fastball as a teenaged lefthander he would have been a much higher overall draft pick. How many teenagers in organized baseball can average that speed on a fastball? Felix Hernandez is the only one of significance that comes to my mind. The others are people like Mark Rogers and Colt Griffin. All righthanders. The same source also claimed Tyler Pelland's velocity is down into the high eighties. Reason: unknown. Last edited by Doc. Scott; 03-29-2006 at 07:39 PM. |
