Oh the humanity

We went to the Dragons game last night. Yikes. I know, they are kids, it's low A, it's very early in the season. But yikes.

I have never seen such hacking in my life. To a man, they would swing at anything from their helmets to their shoe tops. And most of them were swinging from their front foot. We sat two rows behind the dugout and I never saw Powell say a word to anyone after an AB.

The left side of the infield - Reininger at 3rd and Janish at SS - can pick it. Then there is the problem of getting it to first. It was like watching Felipe and EdE with their struggles to make a throw.

Cueto started the game. He thows some heat - but the problem is he just throws. No movement on any pitches. He got shelled.

Jay Bruce left me thinking "this is a first round pick??" He's only 19, I know. But he never got a jump on a ball to right. Good or bad. He would stand there for a second to see where the ball was going and then take off for it. No instinct at all.

Of course a game at 5/3 is always fun. But it looks like it's going to be a long season for Dragon fans.

Re: Oh the humanity

I saw the game on Time Warner Friday night and the defense I saw that night would put Cincinnati to shame. It was awful.

Glad to see we're teaching the way of the Reds all the way through the system...sucktitude.

They had to take a strike last year. Perhaps they are overcompensating as a result of their newfound freedom to hack.

Re: Oh the humanity

I was at the game yesterday and thought that Jay Bruce was a man amongst boys. He's gonna be a star. He carries himself with plenty of confidence and his swing is short and quick.

My two cents.

Re: Oh the humanity

I was also at the game last night and their defense is horrible. I think they officially charged the Dragons with one error but they could have easily charged them with 3 or 4. Not fielding ground balls and errant throws. It was one of the uglier games I have ever seen.

Like Creed said the starting pitcher Cueto has some velocity but he got hit hard. A fastball without movement is going to get hit hard and he was hit hard all night.

I go to about 17 Dragons games a year and hopefully this gets better because last night was awful.

On a brighter note, the Louisville Bats have begun the season 0-4......

Wasn't Marty pontificating during ST on how good LOU would be this year?

Re: Oh the humanity

Well, it's only 4 games... IIRC the last time Dayton had a winning season (2002) they started out really bad but then went on an 11 game win streak later in the season to turn it around. Another point is that in "A" ball the season is actually 2 seasons. So the Dragons can redeem themselves in the 2nd half.

The veteran presence will take over soon and they will start rolling...or something like that.

What the Reds should've done is not told anyone but their own players that the "take a pitch" rule was being thrown out. That way, they'd at least have surprised the first pitcher who went out and just pumped a meatball in for his first pitch, thinking that the Reds players were under a mandate not to swing at it anyway.

Re: Oh the humanity

As far as Bruce waiting to see where the ball went first, I think that was his first game in RF ever. He played CF in HS, last year and the first few games this year in Dayton, the ball coming at a different angle is going to take some slight adjustment.
