Looks like the Reds might have found a gem in Cueto. Coming into this game he had a 2 bb/21 k rate in 15 innings while allowing only 11 hits. Make that 2 walks and 27 strikeouts in 19 innings now.

Yea, and two of his 3 HRs allowed were in his first start. To me he is the most interesting guy in the system right now.

Cueto fires a 1-2-3 5th inning while recording two more strikeouts. His updated line: 5 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 8 strikeouts. All three hits are singles.

Re: 4-25 Minor league updates

Cueto's night is over after five brilliant innings. That brings his 2006 season statline to: 20 innings, 14 hits, 3 HR, 2 walks, 29 strikeouts, 0.80 WHIP, and a 3.15 ERA.

Sarasota has a 6-3 lead. Vazquez: 5.1 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 6 K's.

Dumatrait: 4 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 3 K's.

Votto 0-1 with a walk.

Has anyone seen Cueto yet? I see he's just 5'10", but he's only 20 is making Low A look pretty stupid right now. Is he just polished or do we have something here?

I remember reading on this site a few days ago that Cueto throws a fastball that can touch 95 and mixes in two other solid pitches.

Oh here it is. This quote comes from Doug Dirt, who watched the game on TV a few days ago.

Quote:
Announcer says Cueto throws his fastball at 95 and his changeup at 75. He has also been praising his curve tonight.
That gives him three above average pitches and he shows good command with all three. Great stuff+production=sounds like a pretty good pitching prospect to me.

Re: 4-25 Minor league updates

Cueto is a stud. Watching him pitch is sort of like watching Oswalt pitch(good comparison since both are small guys) in the late 90's working his way up the ladder. Lanky frames, but a athletic release point, mid-90's heat mixed in with quiet changes thrown for strikes, a developing breaking pitch. Has a tendency for the long ball being the anti-sinker pitcher he is, which is always a concern in homer happy GAB, but his power should mute that as he developes.

Even though he is a short guy, he has to much talent for him to be "Medlocked".

Along with Homer, the only other guy who I would call a "true" power pitcher in the organization that will be a future starter IMO. My guess he is under the knife by next summer .

Re: 4-25 Minor league updates

RHP Johnny Cueto whiffed 8 batters in 5 shutout innings of 3-hit ball to earn his 2nd win of the season and help lead Dayton (CIN) to a 4-1 home triumph over Peoria (CHC). Cueto is a rapidly-rising Reds prospect. The 20-year-old right-hander is now tied for the MWL lead in punchouts with 29. He’s permitted just 14 hits and 2 walks in 20 innings, posting a 3.15 ERA. Cueto stands just 5-foot-11 but his fastball routinely hits the low-90s. He also throws a good change and slider.
