Update on Chris Gruler

Minor matters

Chris Gruler, the No. 1 pick in 2002, continues to battle shoulder problems. Gruler has not pitched since July 2003. He was making decent progress early in spring training, throwing off the mound and not far behind the non-rehab pitchers.

But he had a setback. These days, he's long-tossing up to 120 feet. That's a long way from competing.

"He's dealing with the aches and pains of rehab," Reds director of player development Johnny Almaraz said. "We're hoping he's ready for the short season."

The short season begins June 20 when Billings and the Gulf Coast Reds open.

It sure would be something neat to see him finally bounce back though wouldn't it? It's a shame to see kids with such talent never be able to fulfill their dreams in the bigs!

Mama don't let your babies throw curveballs.
Teach them the fastball and changeup and such.
Curveballs look easy to throw but they'll get you sent home,
To see the Doctor and get cut.

Too bad truth in advertising didn't apply to pitching prospects. He went down so fast, there is no way he wasn't hurting when he was drafted.

Mbaybe he wasn't but having him throw 40+IP after a long HS season was stupidty of the highest order. A lot of teams don't even allow pitchers to throw after signing them. The Reds did that with Bailey

Hindsight is 20-20, but it does make you wonder why he signed so quickly when he was so highly touted by folks like BA (They ranked him the #5 player in the draft) coming out of high school.

Who knows, maybe he messed up his shoulder the day he fooled Johnny bench into thinking he was Tom Seaver!

Re: Update on Chris Gruler

The Gruler decision was something else, there was also Prince Fielder who of course the Reds were interested in and was the 3rd choice. They even admitted Kazmir would be quicker to the league, possibly as a franchise closer(which may end up being his best role).

I don't buy "The Reds couldn't afford" Kazmir line either. Dunn knew Kazmir personally and told the Reds "he would be signed" if drafted, if it meant waiting to sign during fiscal year 2003. I think that is a line the media uses to defend Jim Bowden who made the final decision to draft Gruler after the scouts were deadlocked.

I don't cry a minute that Bowden and his subpar associates are gone. The Reds have had 2 dillies in a row. Hopefully Krivsky provides something more.
