another trade idea with Pittsburgh

As we know Pittsburgh is loaded with young pitching, but they are lack on position players so why not offer them this deal. They have put Oliver Perez on the block, and so far he is having another down year after a solid year in 04, this may be the time to get him cheap. So here's my proposal:

Reds trade: Brandon Claussen SP
BJ Symanski OF
Ryan Freel OF

Pirates trade: Oliver Perez SP

Thoughts?

Don't want Perez, I think he's torn something or he was just a 1 year wonder.

He isn't anywhere close to being healthy. He was hitting the mid to upper 90's in 2004 and now can barely break 88 MPH.

His velocity has dropped 7-8mph in the last year, a sure sign of arm problems.

It is certainly plausible, but then it could be mental, mechanical (although that big a drop, a very unlikely explanation), or physical. The physical, time will tell. The steroid theory seems like a potshot, but significant drops in velocity with the busts in the minors of pitchers makes such a charge certainly founded.

Re: another trade idea with Pittsburgh

Despite his struggles so far, it is arguable that Claussen alone has more upside than Perez right now. Never mind adding Symanski and Freel to the deal. Perez has been so bad for the last year and a half that I bet the Pirates would be close to releasing him if he were out of options.

That said, I wouldn't mind having him as a project. But, you don't give up much at all for him. If you wait long enough, he might end up on waivers.

How about Claussen and another player to the Nationals for RHP Livan Hernandez?

Re: another trade idea with Pittsburgh

Why trade a young, cheap pitcher with decent upside for an expensive, worn-down, hard-ridden Livan Hernandez?

I think I'd go Claussen by himself for Hernandez and the cash difference or one of their relievers. They probably wouldn't bite, but that is what I'd be willing to accept.

No thanks, Livan is on the fast road to getting worse.
