Did the Cubs take on Womack's contract?
I'm not understand how this works.
Reds traded for him, Yankees are paying for a large size of his contract already. The Reds pay for the rest, DFA'd him, and the Cubs signed him. What are the Reds paying now, what are the Cubs paying, what are the Yankees paying? |

Not sure of the particulars.
Womack's contract for 2006 was $2.0M. Yanks gave the Reds $900,000 in the trade. Reds were responsible for $1.1M of the rest of his contract. Not sure where the money gets divided after that, or if it does. From what I understand, the Reds may be on the hook for the full $1.1 - major league minimum (the amount the Cubs are paying him) But I'm not 100% on that.

The minimum salary for the 2006 season is $327,000.00 The Reds are on the hook for $773,000.00 of Womack's salary this year. Thanks, Mr. O'Brien.

Oh well .. thats not a crapload of money really in today's game. A toss in the bucket compared to what Milton and Wilson are earning.

Re: Did the Cubs take on Womack's contract?
Isn't the minimum scale based on years of service, i.e. the minimum for somebody with 4 years is higher than the minimum for somebody who is a raw rookie?
I thought I saw something in the neighborhood of $500,000 mentioned as the minimum for someone of Aurilia's experience level when they were negociating with him over the winter. If this is the case, the Reds should be getting back more than $250,000 from the Cubs on Womack. |
