Surgery for WMP

News: Wily Mo Pena, currently on the disabled list due to an injured left wrist, will undergo surgery on Thursday. "He has an injury to the hamate bone in his left wrist. The plan is to perform a surgical procedure on Thursday morning to treat the injury," Red Sox medical director Dr. Thomas Gill told the Boston Globe. "Wily Mo will immediately begin rehabilitation on the wrist. He will be able to continue his throwing and conditioning programs throughout the entire post-operative period."

Wily Mo looks like King Kong but is as fragile as a stickman.

Hang in there, Wily Mo. You'll be back before you know it.

Re: Surgery for WMP

WMP said in an article over the weekend in the Providence Journal that the wrist has been bothering him for two years but would feel better with rest. Sorry I don't have a link.

Wily Mo Pena heads to the DL to have his broken hamate bone removed. While this type of surgery sounds more serious than it actually is, the injury and the rehab are pretty grueling. Several top players, including Ken Griffey Jr. and Pena’s teammate David Ortiz, have come back from this surgery without later problems and no loss of power. It does take a full off-season to get back to normal; even though Pena should be back in mid-August, the power will not be back until 2007.

I don't think so, he had a 3 month rehab that had limited thumb movement
Quote:
In 2001, Kearns never really got untracked. He was hitting just .242 with three home runs through the end of May when a wrist injury sustained on a botched slide in the outfield sidelined Kearns for two months. The original injury had actually occurred three weeks earlier, but Kearns attempted to play through the injury.

Yikes. Wily Mo without power doesn't sound like a very productive ballplayer to me.

I wish him the best for a speedy recovery, though.

IIRC, didn't Aaron Boone have this surgery while with the Reds?

I was thinking of Boone. Knew it was a Red.

GOOD PROGNOSIS - Kremchek on Thursday examined third baseman Aaron Boone, who flew back to Cin cinnati after it was discovered he had suffered a broken bone in his right wrist when he was hit by a pitch in the ni nth inning of Tuesday night's game with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Kremchek said the first order of business in the exam was to make sure the break was new as o pposed to a lingering effect of the pitch that hit Boone on May 14, breaking his right hamate bone and putting him on the disabled list for a month.
