Lost a Reds fan this week

Bloomington, Indiana has a lot of local flavor, and on May 28th we lost one of our main ingredients. Jim was well known at Nick's and the Trojan Horse, and just about any other place where there was beer to be drunk and stories to be told. He and I shared a love of the Reds, Jim a native of Lawrenceburg and me being from Cincinnati. I had the pleasure to work with him for a few years, but it's the short stops to his office and our lunches together that will always remain with me; our April optimism that others around us couldn't quite understand, our arcane language of baseball stats and our nearly encyclopedic memories of the Big Red machine. It was almost as if we had a four year conversation that was picked up whenever we saw each other for any length of time. We talked about a week ago and I remember thinking that he seemed to be doing so well. He looked better than he had in recent years, he seemed to have a lot of energy and as always, he wanted to know what I thought of the latest Reds news. We talked for a while, but I had to run because I was late for an appointment. Walking away, I remembered that I wanted to see if he wanted to go to a game this year with me, but that I'd have to ask him the next time we met. Unfortunately, we won't get that chance.

Good bye Jimmy Hurd, a truer fan I have not known.

You have my condolences, SunDeck My Mom always says "They're in a much better place". He'll have no problem finding company up there - he might be talking with Old Red Guard...

My sympathies to you and Jim's family, good people whom are dear are not always easy to find and then hold on to. I'm sure Jim will always be near to ya rooting those Redlegs along.

Re: Lost a Reds fan this week

Thanks folks. I didn't really think about getting your reactions when I posted this. I just kind of thought this group needed to know about him. For all I know, he may have even been on this board. He blogged, was a computer geek and started a nonprofit ISP here in town a long time ago. Wouldn't surprise me if one day somebody noticed that one of our own hadn't posted in a while. For all I know, that may be him. It's funny though, we never talked about Redszone- our connection to the Reds was much more on the interpersonal level. We talked about them all the time...
