Johnny Cueto named May pitcher of the month, again

MINOR MATTERS: The Reds on Tuesday announced their May minor-league pitcher and player of the month.

Single-A Dayton starting pitcher Johnny Cueto was recognized for the second consecutive month as the organization's top minor-league pitcher.

The right-hander went 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA and held opponents to a .152 batting average over six May starts. He also struck out 34 batters in 33 innings, had a 21 inning scoreless streak from May 13-30 streak and pitched two complete games. In 11 starts this season, Cueto is 5-1 with a 3.10 ERA.

Double-A Chattanooga outfielder Noochie Varner was named the player of the month after hitting .404 with 10 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 34 RBI in 28 games. Varner, 25, entered Tuesday batting .297 through 56 games.

Both players will receive engraved watches for winning the awards.

Re: Johnny Cueto named May pitcher of the month, again

After reading that, I can't help but recall German reunification day in Meiningen, Germany. A group of us stopped by the Soviet Army base there. Most of us were linguists, about 2-3 Russian linguists, if I recall correctly. We had brought bunches of militaria trinkets hoping to trade for some of the soviet stuff. Our first couple of attempts at that failed miserably. Seems the conscripts wanted cash. Just cash. So we essentially stood there buying pieces of these guy's uniforms right off of them while they ostensibly stood guard.

I wonder if Johnny and Noochie like their watches?

I wonder if Cueto will traded this July. Krivsky has shown a "desire" for taller, projectable pitchers in development. That speaks well for Chick,Bailey and Ward. Maybe not so much for guys like Cueto,Pelland and Wood.
