What to do with Claussen

Put him in the pen as a Lefty Specialist.

Before tonight, LH hitters were batting .154 against him with .516 OPS.

LH v. Mercker .321/1.244

LH v. Hammond .275/.700

Claussen replaces Mercker and the Reds have a decent BP from the left side.

Send him to a sports psychologist.

I think you will see Clasussen demoted to the pen after this start, and I think Mays will take his spot in the rotation for the time being.

To the pen, it's not physical or mental, he just isn't that good.

Re: What to do with Claussen

It's time to put him in the pen as a lefty specialist or long reliever. With the out come of his last few starts I'm not sure if there is any real value for a trade.

By the way, first post of REDZONE

In the pen the kid can pitch honestly but, his days as a starter seem to be done

Re: What to do with Claussen

Who'd have thought...Milton this year is turning into Claussen of last year...while Classen of this year is turning into Milton of last year.

Mays is the obvious 5th starter...I guess I'd like to see what Germano can do. He has basicallly ben in AAA for 1.5 years know, would it be rushing him to give him 5 starts in Cincy? We were all surprised at how well Lizard has handled it, maybe Germano can give us a hopeful surprise as well. I just think we all know what Mays is going to give us...which ain't very good.

Re: What to do with Claussen

I agree that Claussen, for whom I had high hopes, should be banished from the starting rotation and sent to the bullpen.
What I would really like to see the Reds try is a four man rotation. There are studies indicating that a four man starting rotation is no harder on pitchers arms than a five man rotation, with the key being to carefully watch pitch counts in the games that are started.

Claussen goes to the pen, keep him there until next season or if the Reds fall out of contention.

Re: What to do with Claussen

One of two things I would do with Claussen, both they involve giving up a jolt. First a question that I am not sure about. Does he have any options left? If so, demote him to AAA. If he doesn't, then I'm with most other people, put him in the bullpen.

I have also been a big supporter of Claussen's and was delighted when we traded for him a couple of years back, but he is far and away the weak link in this rotation. There is nobody more disappointed in Claussen than I am.

His problem, to me, and I'm not a pitching coach or anything, is that he nipples to much and then because he does not have a put away pitch, he is forced to throw a strike on a three-ball count and the hitters are ready to waylay it and most of time do just that. He needs to be more agressive early in the count and "freakin" pitch inside a little more!

It pretty easy to tell if Claussen is going to have a good night or bad night, if he is throwing his breaking stuff early for strikes then he'll have a good night, if he is not, then we'll see more of what we saw last night.

I agree with Marty's statement from last night, "I'll be struck dumb if he makes next start in New York."

If the Reds want to stay in the division/wild card hunt, his spot in the rotation must be addressed.

Mays is the obvious choice and based on the way he has pitched for the Reds, he should get a shot, if he doesn't work then go to Germano or Belisle. If they do not work, trade or pick up somebody else to find an answer.
