? about supplemental draft picks
How does a team get a supplemental first rounder? second rounder?
Also, how does a team get another teams first rounder? I know it has something to do with free agents but I didn't know the specifics. Thanks in advance. |

Re: ? about supplemental draft picks
In a nutshell, at the end of the season, pending free agents are graded as Type A FAs, Type B, Type C, etc depending on the year they had. To get one, you have to make an effort to resign one of your free agents by offering arbitration. If you offer and make a concerted effort to keep a player, but are unable to resign them and they go to another team, then you get the corresponding supplemental pick in the draft. Type A pick would be a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds for instance. Sometimes a team can consider making an offer if they THINK the player wants to go elsewhere, so they can get the free high draft pick. But this can backfire, and has happened, where the player accepts arbitration and stays. There were a lot of people who thought the Reds should have taken a gamble on this with Rich Aurilia last year after the year he had and reports a few teams were interested in him, but after he went a while unsigned and came back here, it's obvious the Reds would have been a case of that strategy backfiring.

Very nicely summed up, Mr. Pornstache.
I've always wanted to say that.
