Griffey is in a slump at the wrong time

He is batting .154 in the last 26 at bats. He has 1 RBI (which was his last homer) in those at bats. Slumps happen, but it couldn't be at a worse time. The Reds need his production in the lineup more than ever. Maybe a change too 4th in the lineup might start a fire under his ass.

And yet he remains in the 3 hole... this is worse than him remaining in CF.

Luckily, they are winning despite his slump. 4-1 after the break ain't bad.

We are winning, that is true, but we aren't scoring runs. Can't sit on your butt like the Reds do when we win and expect miracles to continue to happen. It is like the reason for Narron still being around, because we are winning. If we won with Juan Castro batting 4th, would he bat 4th forever?

Managing people, Narron seems great, managing a lineup and a team, he looks awful. If Griffey continues to bat 3rd, we will struggle big time unless he gets back to his hot streak from earlier this season.

1) Isn't the object of the game to win?

2) Do you honestly think Griffey is going to struggle for much longer? I don't.

He'll come out of it. He always does.

He'll come out just like he always does, and I'd be willing to bet that once he does come out of it, he'll be as hot as anyone for a week or two.

I still like that Griffey is hitting 3rd, as long as Narron keeps hitting Dunn in the two hole. I like the opposing pitcher having to face Dunn and Griffey right off the bat. Pardon the pun.

Re: Griffey is in a slump at the wrong time

It is a fact that his 18-season track record of success gives him a MUCH longer leash, but at the same time, here are some statistics that suggest at least discussing moving him out of the 3-hole instead of simply dismissing it out of hand:

OPS this season of .812 is 0.122 less than his career average
BB/PA has steadily declined each of the past 4 seasons
Since July fourth, 7 for 44 (.171/.227/.293) in 11 games
Has the lowest OBP (.301) of any Red with at least 100 NL plate appearances (excludes Castro's numbers as a Twin)

Like I said, Griffey has been a spectacular all-around player for almost 2 decades, and has earned the benfit of the doubt. However, IMO, it is time to move him to the 4-spot (or wherever power w/o OBP is best utilized) and at the same time examine the reason his sweet swing isn't producing as we are accustomed to seeing. He carried this team for a stretch this season, he still has the ability to be a dominant offensive force for weeks at a time, but getting outs 69% of the time from the third and fourth hitters is going to expose an offense weakened by the loss of Kearns and, to a degree, Lopez.
