Shackelford sent down

As expected, the Reds have optioned Brian Shackelford to Louisville.

Also, Dewayne Wise cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Louisville.

Doesn't that still leave 12 pitchers on the roster?

I'm somewhat surprised that no one else took a run at Wise.

Maybe because he was hurt earlier this year?

...more likely because he has never hit in the majors and only a little in the minors.

Is there still a need for 12 pitchers given the supposed upgrade to the pen?

The need for 12 pitchers has more to do with the effectiveness of the starting rotation than anything else. With Milton and likely Claussen I suspect they will need 7 relievers.

Good point. The pen will likely get taxed heavily during their starts.

Why option down Shack, he has been unhittable against lefties. Weathers should have gotten the boot IMO.

Re: Shackelford sent down

I was really hoping they found a way to trade Weathers or maybe flip one of the new RPs. Shack has been great against lefties and I hated to see him go. Standridge has been lights out in his last few outings. There is really noone I would like to see go~! This one is going to be bad no matter how it shakes out.

Re: Shackelford sent down

The good news with Wise clearing is that he is still in the Reds system. The added bonus is he would be eligible to be traded also since he cleared waivers. That could be important during this waiver wire trade deadline now.

if he cleared waivers, he has no trade value. He wasn't worth $10K and a roster spot
