Anyone know the true prognosis for Matt Belisle?

Anyone know the true prognosis for Matt Belisle-- I thought he'd be back fairly soon but looks like it may be a longer term injury.

I'd like to see him get a chance at 5th starter....he's never been consistent but he seems to have enough stuff to be a starter.

Well I have no ginsu knives in hand, so I'm no Timothy Kremchek, but I have heard through the grapevine that Belisle has a stress fracture in his back and that's what's keeping him so long. Even when he did come back for a few days between the DL stints, he was still unable to sit in the bullpen, just like before the original DL stint. If this is the case, he won't be back until September callups.

Captain, on Balfour, last I knew, he had a minor setback and came back to Cincinnati away from his rehab stint in Dayton. I haven't heard anything new other than it was supposedly a minor setback, but he hasn't been sent back yet.

According to the Cincinnati Post today, Balfour is back in Sarasota continuing his rehab. Lohse took over Balfour's locker.

Seem to recall that Belisle was considered a good prospect in the Atlanta org. but he had some kind of back problem and the Bravos dealt him to the Reds for Mercker. Could be a recurrence of the same injury. Wasn't it Lou Piniella who said, When Atlanta starts talking about trading one of their pitchers run as fast as you can. (or something close to that).

Stolen from the offices of WLW, here is the

Official Script: Beacon Orthopaedic Injury Report

Position Player
Doctor Kremcheck: (Player's name) is doing great. Just great. He's made a ton of progress and is running and throwing much better. I wouldn't be surprised if he was back in action in no time.

Pitcher
Doctor Kremcheck: (Pitcher's name) is doing great. Just great. He threw some long toss the other day without any problems. I wouldn't be surprised if he was back in action in no time.

Re: Anyone know the true prognosis for Matt Belisle?

I have lower back problems so I know from experience how difficult it is trying to manage the pain. It also isn't something that is easy to fix, so it has to be that much harder for a major league pitcher. I have a hard time believing that Belisle will be much of a long-term contributor to any team.

I'm with Jimbo, back troubles affect everything you do, and the stress of just playing catch with the neighbors kid is tough, I'd hate to think of pitching at the Major League level
