Kent Mercker

Kent Mercker will require Tommy John surgery after it was discovered he had completely torn his ulnar collateral ligament and suffered an 80-percent tear in his flexor tendon. He's out for the year.

The 38-year-old Mercker was already expected to retire at season's end, so it looks like his career is over. Even if he changed his mind and wanted to try a comeback, he'd have a tough time returning in the second half of next year.

Re: Kent Mercker

He was never really healthy this year. Too bad because a healthy Mercker could/would have solved a lot of problems this team has had. Certainly better than the likes of Coffey/Majewski/Cormier/Weathers/Bray.

Kent Mercker was always a true professional, on and off the field. I wish him luck in life after baseball.

Re: Kent Mercker

From Marc's blog (so sad):

Monday, August 14, 2006

Quote:
Under the knife

The fact that Kent Mercker was able to throw another pitch in the 10th inning Friday after feeling a burning sensation in his elbow on a wild pitch to Ryan Howard was fairly remarkable. An MRI and further examination by Doc Kremchek today revealed that Mercker had completely torn his ulnar collateral ligament and suffered an 80-percent tear in his flexor tendon. Mercker will undergo reconstructive surgery Thursday, but that's more for golf purposes than baseball. His career is done.

Re: Kent Mercker

Props to the Dublin, Ohio Native for a sterling career! And also for letting it all hang out even though (I would lay money on this fact) he knew his arm was toast and came out and gave everything he had left a few more times for this organization.

The players oughta (especially his pen mates) recognize what he gave up for this particular team and go out there and gave HIM 110% of what they have to see it through. Everyday Eddie is another who is giving it everything for his teammates and risking the rest of his career on it.

What a class act, for :mercker: because we are :notworthy !

Re: Kent Mercker

Kent Mercker had a good career. It sucks that it had to end due to injury.

Hope the surgery goes well along with a complete recovery. I'm sure Muirfield Village will look forward to a new member next year.
