Besides you know, just being in it with a chance to be world champs? I'm thinking next year also in terms of effects. Some effects of making the playoffs I think would be:

- Krivsky would be more motivated, and have a whole offseason to evaluate talent and pick up players, as opposed to very little time when he was hired. Of course this happens with or without playoffs, but making the playoffs would be a major morale booster as far as this goes.

- The new owner Bob Castellini also has a first entire offseason. If he sees the Reds in the playoffs, he's very likely to up the payroll on good players Krivsky could make a deal for. Again, he could very well do this anyway, but getting a taste of a shot at winning it all would be a big motivator.

- Free agent players would be more likely to sign with the Reds, knowing that its not a dead destination, but a legit contender.

- There would be a lot more fan support and sellouts, especially with a winning team. Cincinnati has a lot of big baseball fans, but have been conditioned to mediocre season after mediocre season. A playoff year (especially watch out for the kind of crowds that will show if the Reds are in the WC or NL Central lead at the end of the year) - will also pump fan support a lot higher for next year. More crowds = bigger revenue ... bigger revenue = more payroll, on down the line. It's a snowball effect.

Anyway this is what I think. If we make the playoffs, honestly I would be so excited - if we lost in the divisional series, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world (even though if we get there, of course I want the Reds to win). But just making the playoffs would be a major step for the future, it wouldn't just be a major chance for this year but next year.

it's the playoffs..... babyyyyy... that is benefit enough... 11 years is a long time

I'm just happy that they've gone from moribund to mediocre.

They're also gonna have quite a bit of jack to throw around in the offseason, what with Lopez/Kearns and their big paydays off the books.

I just hope Wayne's better at making prudent free agent signings as opposed to cherry picking detritus and making trades.

As far as Cincy now being more attractive to free agents, keep in mind that most of the teams in NL are in the same boat as the Reds.

They all consider themselves contenders.

Making the playoffs in the first year of ownership would definaley be a big feather in their cap. Even if they slowly fade out of contention, I'd say this team/ownership group is a VAST improvment over where the entire baseball world picked us to be at this time or the end of the year.

Making the playoffs might be a big dent in people's reluctance to spend their entertainment dollars on the Reds. Even being in the hunt in September might start increasing the attendence in significant ways, but I think making the playoffs, even if we are put out right away, will be a huge step towards re-establishing the Reds as a viable entertainment choice.

I don't think the FA's will flock here if we make the playoffs, but it certinally couldn't hurt the Reds ability to attract someone. Kriv would have a nice case to make (moving in the right direction, made the playoffs in the first year,etc).

Kriv's moves in the offseason will be different than these "trial and error" type moves now, IMO. There will be better options available and there will more time to make the deals.

It will be an interesting winter, that is fo sho.

I've been saying this for a month now. I'm very anxious to see what we do over the off season and I like the direction he's taking the team. And the playoffs this year are gravy, which is really tasty!

people that you didn't think even remembered the Reds will be talking to you about the team and your replies will show that you are weirdly fanatical.

you'll also discover that you can no longer get just about any ticket.

more than just the moves he will make what will really be interesting is what he does to our farm system...he seems serious about it enough to clean house on some of the trash we have down there.... maybe new scouts too..

i think he understands the business and really will do a lot of tinkering through the organization this offseason..i am excited about it
