Re: Janish= SS of Future?

I'm not sure why Brandon Phillips isn't being touted more at SS. This kid could be the best defensive SS in the organization if given the job.

Re: Janish= SS of Future?

The only thing he really has going for him is his plate discipline. A .270 average in the Florida State League at 22 shouldn't inspire any confidence. If you can't OPS above .700 in the majors, there's basically no amount of defense that can make up for it. (see Perez, Neifi)

I've always like Janish, and Cody Strait as well. They are the only reason's I check sarasota's box scores.

Re: Janish= SS of Future?

If i remember correctly, the FSL wasn't to kind to Votto either. In fact, there are only 8 guys in the entire league hitting over 300 and 5 of those could drop below 300 at any moment. I know Votto's younger and I'm not comparing the 2, but it's not like Janish has been around 5 years and just now made it to the FSL.

and he was only 21.

Age/level success is a huge predictor. 23 is old for A ball and they should be dominating at that level/age if they want to have a possible major league career.

What Jay Bruce is doing is impressive but what sends it off the charts it that he is doing it as a 19 year old.

Well, to Janish's credit, he's got more pop than Olmedo or Bergolla have ever had, at any level.

But being old for his level, he's got to keep it up and raise the output some more to catch any notice.

Re: Janish= SS of Future?

Janish has had a nice year to-date, displaying more power than he did in the past. At the same time, he has shown that he has recovered from TJ surgery, and shown good defense and good plate discipline. I think he has progressed steadily, and is more advanced than Szymanski and Tatum.

Point taken. The cautious nature of my optimism for Janish's prospects was communicated unintentionally. I do think that with Janish, Valaika, Loo, Justin Turner we are starting to address our farm system's lack of infield depth. I hope that in next year's draft and perhaps in trades and FA signings, we can add to our depth.

Re: Janish= SS of Future?

If we were still in the era of Mark Belanger, Larry Bowa and Don Kessinger I would be excited about Janisch. Now not so much.

I agree with the idea of Phillips being the guy.

I'm going to say Chris Vilaika is the shortstop of the future at the moment. Or if his body is as young as the Reds front office claims, Royce Clayton.

Re: Janish= SS of Future?

Valaika might be looking good, but I would hold off touting him as the SS of the future until he shows he can do something against competition above rookie ball.

Anybody know if Valaika has been playing shortstop or second base for Billings?

I know he was drafted at SS, but started off the season playing 2B with Rojo at SS. Since they signed Turner to play 2B, has Valaika resumed playing SS?

While I'm asking, what position was Milton Loo playing in the GCL? Baseball America has him listed as a 3B, but I remember reading an article that stated he was playing SS the few times he wasn't DH-ing.
