Playoff roster question
Not sure how part of determining the playoff eligible players works. I know you set a 25 man roster on August 31, plus you can add 1 player for each player you've got on the 60 day DL. That means the Reds can add 3 pitchers to the pool to replace Wilson, Claussen and Balfour. My question is what about the guys on the 15 man DL? Do you have to put together a 25 man playoff roster by using some of the current 25 man roster and whichever 15 day DL players you want eligible, or are the 15 day DL players added to the 25 man roster? Looking at the roster right now for example there are 25 active players, 3 on the 15 day DL and 3 on the 60 day DL. Would the Reds have 28 eligible players to choose from or 31?

Re: Playoff roster question
the only thing that Reds fans know about playoff rosters is that there are seldom Reds players on them

Re: Playoff roster question
The Transactions Glossary
Playoff Rosters: Playoff rosters must be set at 25, not including disabled players, on August 31. For each player on the 60-day DL, teams may add players to the eligible list during the playoffs at the same position, provided that they were in the organization on August 31. This is why some teams will bring up injured minor-league players and put them on the 60-day DL. Teams must choose 25 players from their playoff eligible list before each round of the playoffs. Disabled List: The disabled list is restricted to players who have been given a medical diagnosis by an authorized doctor. There are two types of major-league disabled lists, the regular or 15-day disabled list and the emergency or 60-day disabled list. Players who are placed on the disabled list are inactive for a minimum of 15 or 60 days depending on the list. Players on the 15-day DL can be moved the 60-day DL at any time. Players on the 60-day DL cannot be moved to the 15-day DL. Players on the 60-day DL do not count against the 40-Man Roster. Often a player is moved to the 60-day DL to add a non-roster player to the roster. For every player on the 60-day DL, another name may be added to the playoff eligible list at same position as the player on the 60-day DL on August 31. A player may be placed on the DL retroactive to any date after the last date he appeared in game, up to 10 days before the date of placement on the DL. If a player spends an entire season on the 60-day DL, it does not count against rookie eligibility. All players must be removed from the disabled list by the end of the free agent filing period (15 days after the conclusion of the World Series). Trading Deadline: There are two trading deadlines in baseball, July 31 and August 31. July 31 (at 4 PM EDT) is the last day teams can make a trade without having to pass a player through waivers until 5 PM on the day after the scheduled end of the regular season. This results in most of the biggest trades being made at that time. On August 31, teams must set their playoff rosters. By this time, most teams know whether or not they have a shot at the playoffs. Teams who are out of the race will put some of their more expensive players on the block sometimes and offer them in trades. Role players often get moved so they can be pinch-runners, pinch-hitters, or utility players for playoff teams.

Re: Playoff roster question
so if a guy is on the 15 day DL on 8/31, he's not in the playoff "eligible" pool?

Re: Playoff roster question
The Reds now have 4 players on the 60 day dl. So it looks like the Reds can choose from at least 29 players for the playoff roster. The players on the 15 day dl may be eligible.

Re: Playoff roster question
Francisco Rodriguez of the 2002 Anaheim Angels appeared in all rounds of the playoffs after appearing in only five games (all in September) during the regular season.

Re: Playoff roster question
See if this helps...
1.) All players on the 25-man roster as of Aug. 31 are eligible for postseason rosters. 2.) For every player on the 60-day DL, that allows a player to be chosen at the same position who is NOT on the 25-man roster as of Aug. 31. |

Re: Playoff roster question
So Let's see that means the 25 man active roster on the 31st plus 4 more players at the position of P,P,P,P. That's Wilson, Claussen, Mercker & Balfour as of right now. I doubt Balfour back but he possibly could be bye then, I am not sure as I have not heard any extremly recent updates on him. The last I remember he had some sort of "arm fatigue" I think, during his most recent comeback about a month or so ago. Anyone have any updates on him?
If he stays on the 60 day, then my question to all is who are the 29 men for the playoff roster? Of course this is assuming no one else goes on it. I guess it would be Standridge, Belisle, Majewski & either Michalak or Shackelford. This of course is also assuming no one else goes on the 60 day DL if so we might need another 2 or 3 players to add to that list! Majewski could perhaps end up there if he doesn't get enough rest this DL trip. As far as K-Rod goes he might have been one of those 60 day DL replacements and didn't have to be active in August, right?

That's why if someone on the 40-man roster from the minors was injured - like Dumatrait a couple years ago when he had TJ surgery - the Reds would promote them to the 25-man on Aug. 31, then immediately put them on the 60-day DL to create another spot for a replacement. |

Re: Playoff roster question

There's reason to believe that will change this year, with the Reds in the thick of the post- season hunt and in need of extra bodies for the stretch run. They have an off day Aug. 31, giving general manager Wayne Krivsky one last opportunity to scrounge for help outside the organization, before beginning a key series at San Diego on Sept. 1. Manager Jerry Narron said he expects to have at least one additional player for that series. "There will definitely be an outfielder here the first chance we get," said Narron. That outfielder probably will be Chris Denorfia, assuming the balky right knee that forced him to miss some time last week is healthy. If it isn't, Norris Hopper likely would be in line for a return to the Reds. Hopper may be back anyway, as he could serve as a pinch-hitter, pinch-runner and defensive replacement down the stretch. Outfielder Brandon Watson may also get a look for the same duties. The one catch - and something else the Reds haven't had to worry about lately - is that none of the aforementioned outfielders would be eligible for the playoffs if called up after Aug. 31. Only players on the 25-man roster and major league disabled list at the end of that day are eligible, with one exception. Any player in the organization Aug. 31 can be named to the playoff roster in place of a player on the disabled list at his position. Because all of the Reds currently on the DL are pitchers, they wouldn't be able to add a position player to their playoff roster. Still, those injuries will give the Reds some flexibility within their organization. With Gary Majewski, Jason Standridge and Eddie Guardado on the 15-day DL and Brandon Claussen, Grant Balfour and Paul Wilson on the 60-day, the Reds would theoretically have six extra pitchers to choose from. They would not be able to use Kent Mercker's spot because he isn't eligible for activation from the 60-day DL before the end of the regular season, whereas Balfour, Claussen and Wilson would. Of course, they hope Guardado and Majewski will be with them for the stretch run and into the playoffs if they make it that far, so their spots shouldn't be in play. But Claussen and Wilson are done for the season and it's doubtful Balfour would be brought back for the postseason after missing the entire season because of injury. Balfour has made a rehab appearance for Class A Sarasota Friday night, allowing a run in one inning. If necessary, the Reds could use one of those roster spots for someone like Elizardo Ramirez, Joe Mays, Brian Shackelford or - dare we say it? - Homer Bailey during the playoffs. A couple of those pitchers are pretty good bets to wind up in Cincinnati in September anyway, along with Standridge. Ramirez and Mays are possibilities to step back into the rotation if Chris Michalak falters. |

Re: Playoff roster question
My suggestion: A certain catcher goes on the DL. They won't need three catchers in the playoffs.
