Ryan Howard named NL MVP

per the fun little text message I get from the Reds.

IMO, it should have been Pujols.

I agree on Pujols. Its nice to see someone different snag it though. Especially a player like Howard. Congrats!!

I guess the question is how much should playing on a team that makes the postseason weigh into the decision of who is MVP. Howard certainly had the better stats.

Not really. Pujols lead Howard in OBP, SPCT, and OPS. Pujols also lead the NL in Win Shares with 39, while Howard finished 6th with 31.

Let me clarify--Howard had better stats in the categories weighed most heavily by people who vote for this sort of thing, HRs and RBI. You and I both know that Pujols exceeded Howard in most meaningful categories aside from HRs, but the MVP voters aren't looking at win shares, OPS, etc.

I really think it was Howard's HR total that won him the vote.

Oh, I agree. 58 HRs definitely caught the writers attention.
