John Thomson to the Jays

Assuming he would have been interested in Cincinanti would he have been a viable option for the rotation? Reasonable contract. Not stellar numbers but at least on the surface servicable. However he only pitched 80 innings in 18 starts. Injury perhaps?

Quote:
The Blue Jays have reportedly come to terms with free agent John Thomson on a one-year, $500,000 contract.

We can't remember the last time we were this strongly in favor of a J.P. Ricciardi move. Taking price into account, Thomson was the best gamble left out there for a team in need of a starting pitcher. He'll have to compete for a rotation spot, but he could easily emerge as the Jays' No. 3 starter over Gustavo Chacin.

As we get closer to Febuary, does it seem like the prices are dropping?

That seems like a steal for the Jays. I'm assuming Thomson's health is an issue?

Forget Zito and whoever, this the type of signing I would have liked to see Wayne make.

I would have spent $550k on John Thomson. The only negative is that I'd spend that money on baseballs that leave the yard at GABP. So, in reality it's 1.1 million.

Good Move by the Jays.

I agree and have been disappointed that he has not made some signings like this! It is really what I expected him to do! Carlos Pena would have been a good gamble to name one.

Exactly, and that is why the Reds have not been as active as many would have liked. Two months ago he would have cost twice that. Now, WK can look around and see that there is still some good talent out there and if he so chooses he can get it at a fairly good price.

That's a nice price. Meanwhile we'll be paying Milton 9M for less production. Likely way less production.

Yes. Thomson's health is an issue. But for $500,000, it's worth the gamble.

Re: John Thomson to the Jays

Toronto, while not quite the homer-happy park, is a pretty good hitter's park. I'm surprised WK couldn't swing a "let's hope so" contract like this.

Maybe it's the time passing, but I thought Thomson was going to get a bit more cash than this in free agency. Not because he's good, just what the market looked like it was demanding.

I'm inclined to agree FCB.

C'mon Wayne, quit sittin' on your hands...a gamble worth taking. He could very well be a 500,000 Milton.
