It was an interesting social phenomenon. It was written to ridicule racism and bigotry. Archie was not a man to be admired for his ignorance and insensitivity.

But a huge part of the population made him their hero, a man who "told it like it was".

The young people of the day identified with "Meathead" and Gloria, while the old guard loved Archie.

Another All in the Family year -

Ironically - 14 of the top 20 shows (including 9 of the top 10 shows) in 1973 were CBS Shows.

It's like no one else had a network.

And Lucille Ball was STILL getting ratings even twenty years after the fact. That would be like Alan Alda getting ratings if he went to ER or CSI Miami.
