Huge MMA Deal: UFC Buys PRIDE
I'm not sure about the rest of the MMA fans out there, but to me, this is outstanding news! We will now to get to see who really are the true championship fighters in the world now that UFC fighters and PRIDE fighters will be matched up against one another.
The UFC broke pay-per-view revenue records last year with over $222 million in pay-per-view buys, and they'll likely shatter those records in 2007. UFC 66, which headlined Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz, grossed nearly $42 million with over 1 million pay-per-view buys. I can't imagine how many buys the annual "Super Bowl of MMA" will generate when it's launched now that the UFC has purchased PRIDE. http://www.nbcsports.com/ufc/1282716/detail.html Quote:

Re: Huge MMA Deal: UFC Buys PRIDE
That's massive news. If UFC plays it's cards right, they could be averaging over 1 million buys per show by the end of the year.

Someday I hope to become a master of Rex Kwon Do so that I too can fight in the Octagon.

Re: Huge MMA Deal: UFC Buys PRIDE
In a way, I am saddened by this as I liked the PRIDE Fighting setup, but I've heard that the Fertittas will keep the PRIDE trademarks such as fighting in the ring and the big theatrical setup for the shows. A part of me is sad to see PRIDE's specific rules go by the wayside, but a part of me is glad that there will be unified rules - something essential to the continuing growth of this as a "legitimate" sport. I think I'll most miss PRIDE's yellow card system though for stalling "lay-n-pray" fighters though.....UFC could really use the rule.
