Prospect Profile:Robbie Nickols
http://reds.mostvaluablenetwork.com/index.php?p=297
22. Robbie Nickols, LHP, Pima (Ariz.) CC (2005 Draft) 6-5/215#, L/L, Age 20 Assigned: GCL Nickols posted a 6-2 record, 3.48 ERA in 44 IP with 64 K. The Reds drafted him in the 25th round last year, making him the second player they’ll attempt to draft-and-follow for a second year. He throws hard, and I hope he’s signed. May ‘06 update: According to Baseball America, he was! We’ll see if they’re right. |

Re: Prospect Profile:Robbie Nickols
This was from a pm from Robbie Nickols mom.
"He caught some sort of viral infection. I have to say the Reds doctors were very viligent and put him in the hospital last Thursday. He is getting back to normal, but has been sent home to rest. He gets in tonight at 9:00 Tucson time. So far the tests have been negative but I think he picked up viral Hepatitis A from eating raw oysters a few weeks back. All his symptoms pointed to viral Hep. A, but all lab work came back negative. We may never know. He says he feels fine and all labs report he is on the way to recovery. Thought you might have noticed he has not pitched in awhile and that is why. Maybe my home cooking is what he needs." |

Re: Prospect Profile:Robbie Nickols
This is from a pm I got from Robbie Nickols mom.
"Hello: Thought I'd update you on Robbie. He looks and feels great. Followed up with a doctor here in Tucson. All labs and reports came back normal, as I stated earlier we may never know what he had, but he is back to his ole self. He laid low until all the test results were in and currently he is working out at the gym with a trainer. If he is not called back for fall training in Sarasota then he will be starting a parttime job and you'll see him next spring." |

Re: Prospect Profile:Robbie Nickols
I am still waiting to hear from his mom to see where he has been assigned. I don't see him on any roster. Does anyone know if he is at extended spring training?

Re: Prospect Profile:Robbie Nickols
This is from a Pm I got from Robbie Nickols Mom.
"Robbie is in extended spring training. He has been pitching in the scrimmage games. He has been in mid relief and from what I understood he will be going in as a starter this Thursday. The last game he pitched was against the twins for 3 innings. He is doing well, working on mechanics, and whatever they tell him. He rooms with Eric Schaler, they became friends last fall. His former roommate Jared Leach decided not to return. I'll keep you posted. Marion Nickols" |

Re: Prospect Profile:Robbie Nickols
I had dinner with him and my son Eric on Monday night. Went over to Tommy Bahama's for a meal and walked around some. Talked to him and his health is excellent. Both of them were a little disappointed in being in extended spring training, but who would want a player that was happy to be there. They are both expecting to get moved up or leave for Billings in late May. Robbie is a great kid and like some lefties, has a quirky sense of humor. He has the size and arm to take him far.

Re: Prospect Profile:Robbie Nickols
Robbie pitched innings 3 and 4 today against the Pirates. Gave up a couple of hits but no runs. Looked solid according to Eric, who described his own 9th inning outing, as horrendous. I've learned not to ask about details when the conversation starts like that. I'll wait for him to fill me in, a year or two down the road.
