Re: MLB Testing Proves the ball isn't juiced... or does it?
I watched something the other day - I wish I could remember where I saw it, but it was the Rawlings plant in Central America where they make & hand stitch all their baseballs.
They were running similiar tests to what's described above - with a machine designed to record the bounce of a ball shot out of a mini cannon against a piece of hardwood. The PR flak/interviewie made the point of stating that they've kept data for years and always make sure that the bounce data remains the same. Take that for what it's worth. |

That probably was an episode of "How It's Made" on the Science Channel. They did an episode recently where they showed how they were made and it sounds just like what you described.

As irony has it - the show was on again tonight - it was Modern Marvels on "Sports Balls".
I Tivo'd it - here is the rundown of facts from the show. Rawlings fires balls out of a pitching machine at 57mph at a piece of white ash. They then use equipment to test the bounce of the ball off the ash. That bounce is recorded in velocity - to come up with a ration. The ratio number has to fall between .514 & .578 - which the show claims that Rawlings has required of all their baseballs since they started testing with this method in 1977. For humors sake - the wood they bounce it off is a square, flat piece of white ash. |

Yes thats right. I have both Modern Marvels and How Its Made on Season Pass on my Tivo and I got them confused. I am a total documentary nut.
