Peterson column - The Reds, A Drama in Three Parts
Good column this week from City Beat's Bill Peterson. I think I've even likened this season to a Greek Tragedy, and Peterson even brings in The Chorus!

Even with a healthy Bray and Majewski this season would have needed up in the toilet because of starters 3-5.
That trade was awful, but it's not the main culprit behind this team.

It isn't a matter of "if the Reds didn't make that trade, Kearns and Lopez would be playing for them right now." It's the fact that Wayne made the move in desperation without visiting all his options (like a deadline deal or an offseason deal). Trading Kearns and Lopez was a decent idea. Trading them for junk was a horrible one.

The 3 and 4 starters ain't that bad. They have been a little hit unlucky and it has ballooned their ERA's higher than they should be...this week things started to even out.

If that's the case, then he should focus on that point and dispense with all the misleading "pick one or the other" exercises.

IMO, if not for the 7th/8th inning breakdowns, this team is in 2nd place and in the thick of the race. That's not to say there aren't other huge problems or that they'd even be at .500 but I think they'd be in 2nd in this sorry division. |

Maybe so, but another part of my post was my thinking that neither of those 2 are that great that they would be doing that much better then the current cast.

Re: Peterson column - The Reds, A Drama in Three Parts
If you take away the injuries, I believe Majewski and Bray for Kearns and Lopez is a pretty even trade. Right now, middle relievers are much harder to come by than poor fielding second basemen with .307 OBP and corner outfielders with .719 OPS, both of whom rank one and two on their team in strikeouts.
Injuries happen. They are a seemingly unfair aspect of the game, but pitching is more difficult to develop and obtain than middle of the road offense at second base and corner outfield spots. I keep reading the Reds should have gotten more for Kearns and Lopez, but I'm not certain that they had that much value to other teams. They both had decent numbers, but no one was going to give up much pitching for their ilk.
