Stanton DL; Gosling up

The Reds put Stanton on the DL today and recalled Michael Gosling. Gosling gets no mention on here, but this year working as a starter his stats:

70.67 IP, 3.06 ERA, 7.26 K/9, 2.67 BB/9, .89 HR/9, .297 BABIP, 3.89 FIP.

A lefty that can go multi-innings. Can probably lose his weakest pitch in the pen. He's still only 26. I think he should stay up the rest of the year and see if he can be a cheap LH swingman in 2008. This is a more interesting arm than people think IMO.

I imagine the disaster that was last year's stint in the majors probably colors some people's perceptions but I'm willing to take your word for it Mth.

Re: Stanton DL; Gosling up

with the inconsistancy of Lohse and Belisle.. you think one of them could be bumped to the pen and Gosling being named a starter?

Interesting that Gosling gets the nod over Dumatrait.

Lohse has a DIPS ERA of 3.87, Belisle 3.93.

There's zero chance either is going to the bullpen at this stage.

last 10 games Dumatrait is 3-4 w/ a 4.55 era and 27k/25bb

whereas Gosling is 5-3 w/ 3.00 era and 53k/16bb in his last 10

Don't take my word. I'm not that smart. But last year he had one appearance for 1.333 innings so that is a little tough to judge. He may be a disaster but I'd rather find out about a 26 Y/O kid than keep going with some of these others. In AAA this year he seems to have gotten his command in order. His Ks are up and his BBs are down. He had shoulder troubles while in Arizona and perhaps he's just now bouncing back all the way from that. Prior to his shoulder issues he was thought of as a potential number 2 or 3 starter. He wouldn't be the first guy to emerge years later while still young as a decent reliever.

May as well find out. I'm simply optimistic about the opportunity.

I agree that it's unlikely they'll be moved from the rotation, but I think Belisle's a unique case; he's moving out into uncharted waters as a MLB starter. Who knows if he's going to unravel?

Re: Stanton DL; Gosling up

If he sticks, it could mean the end for Victor Santos. A lefty who can also serve as a long man fills multiple roles in the bullpen.

They could have a DIPS ERA of zero...if they don't step it up pretty soon, they should go to the bullpen.

Re: Stanton DL; Gosling up

So now we have Stanton, Bray and Everyday Eddie as lefties trying to get back to Cincy. Be interesting to see who gets the call first...

I think that the one who would have been considered the longest of longshots at the beginning of the season will make it back first--Guardado. Now whether he should be back this soon is another matter.

The whole point of DIPS is pointing out that the defense is who needs to step it up, not them.
