Re: Odd famous person sighting

People I've met and had conversations with:

Drew Carey (he went to my college and was in my fraternity. Homecoming King one year and stayed and partied with us all night. He goes back to Kent occasionally and parties it up rock star style. Last time I saw him was the last day of classes in '97)

Olivia Newton-John - Saw her in a Subway restaraunt. She had a concert at the venue across the street from where I work. Nice lady.

Johnny Bench - BogeyBusters. I rode on his cart. My cousin was his caddy.

Pete Rose - Numerous times and various places including horse tracks around Cincy and KY.

Dave Concepcion - Montgomery Inn. I was younger. He hit on my Mom. It was strange.

Bobby Knight - Bogey Busters. Same deal as Bench, different year.

Joe Morgan - He was a speaker at a doctor / son convention I went to with my Dad.

George Foster - Same as Morgan.

Bo Derek - Saw her while I was on vacation in Jamaica. I've never seen a more beautiful woman. I talked to her for 15 minutes or so. She was real friendly.

Kip Winger - Saw him in Panama City (that's where all of the cool folks hang out, I hear). He was there picking up high school chicks at the height of his fame (80's). I was trying to do the same. I wasn't as successful. Still mad about that. Partied with him in his hotel room, though, and it was pretty cool. I was a freshman in H.S.

I saw Elaine Irwin Mellencamp at Kroger, the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in real life.

Quite the star studded show.

Besides the Cyrus duo, that show includes Emily Osment, little sister of Haley Joel Osment of Sixth Sense fame.

Re: Odd famous person sighting

I was thinking about this and I thought of a few other cool ones from my girlfriend (who's pretty darn good/lucky at meeting celebrities):

My girlfriend and her best friend were down near Walt Disney World back when they were in high school and they were eating at one of the chain restaurants (Hard Rock maybe?) and they realized Tiger Woods was sitting by himself at the table next to them. This was before he was huge so no one was really bothering him. Both were too shy to go say anything (they only knew who he was because they thought he was cute) so they just sat there watching him. I called BS on her story (she didn't follow sports then - I didn't consider the cute factor) but then I asked her what he was eating as a test. And she said it was so wierd because he just had a cheeseburger, fries, and a strawberry milkshake. Well I had read an article about him later that said that was his favorite meal. And there's no way she would have known that meal.

She went to college at Miami (Ohio) and her freshman year was Big Ben's sophomore year. He lived in the apartment next door to one of her friends. The whole year I was telling her he was going to be a big deal and to get an autograph. But she always said she didn't want to bother him. But then towards the end of the year he asked her friend out on a date and her friend declined saying she didn't like to date jocks. Well, his junior year was when he exploded and we all know the rest of the story.

When we were in high school my friends and I would sometimes go down to the visiting team's hotel to try and get autographs before games. Well my girlfriend came along with us one time and was really not into the whole autograph thing. She was bored and left us and went over to a nearby Starbucks to get coffee and when she was in line we saw Craig Biggio walk in and get in line right behind her. She was totally oblivious to him and just got her coffee and came back out. So I gave her a couple index cards and said if you see someone that looks like a player ask them to sing these. About a half hour later she had drank the coffee and had to go to the bathroom. So she walked into the Westin and went to the public bathrooms right in the lobby. She walked out a few minutes later and had one of the cards signed. She said this guy standing next to the bathroom looked like a player and she talked to him and got his autograph. On the cards was signed Jeff Bagwell. All the autograph seekers at the hotel had missed even seeing him come out and leave (he snuck out the back door near the bathrooms).

Re: Odd famous person sighting

When I was about 16 I was at the airport in Minneapolis waiting for a flight back to Cincy when I look over and see a mountain of a man sitting a couple rows to my left. Turns out the one and only Anthony Munoz was flying back to Cincy also. I was too shy to approach him at first but I think he kept noticing me looking his direction so he came over, sat down and and chatted about Reds baseball of all things for about 30 minutes until our flight boarded. Also gave me a couple autographs. Totally went out of his way to do something nice for a kid that he could have just ignored, I will never forget that as long as I live. Truly a class human being.

Oh, I forgot Captain Lou Albano. I saw him in the bathroom of the airport in Atlanta when I was a junior in H.S. I asked him if Cyndi Lauper was as obnoxious and annoying as she appears on TV. He laughed and said "Honestly, I've never had anybody ask me that, but, yes, she is."

I've seen Bob Kevoian (Bob and Tom) several times at a Marsh in Carmel, IN. He's usually buying lots and lots beer.

Chuck Yeager
Of all the people that have been listed in this thread, this is the one that makes me the most jealous.

Re: Odd famous person sighting

I met Chuck Yeager a few years ago at a meeting of Yeager Scholars at Marshall University. I'm not a Yeager Scholar myself for two very good reasons: (1) the program was started after I finsihed college, and (2) I would have never been chosen anyway.
Yeager was a cool guy. I got his autograph on my copy of his book "Press On." I only wish I had had a camera with me so I could have had my photo taken with him.

Re: Odd famous person sighting

Two years ago I saw Johnny Bench sing. It was the night before the Pro-Am for the 3M Championship (Champions Tour event) I was playing in. He had a little too much at the reception and he busted out into song with a mic while he was bein honored on the podium.

I met Anthony Munoz YEARS ago while I was working at Steinberg's.

At last year's World Series, I shook hand and met Ernie Harwell and Jon Miller.

And just today, I sat and had a conversation with Tony Gwynn for about a half hour (on top of picking him up and dropping him off at his hotel; with the car service of course). And Tony is an awesome guy. About as unassuming and down to earth as a guy could be.

Re: Odd famous person sighting

I guess I forgot to add, I was at Roger Staubach's wedding. His fiancee lived across the street from us and she and her sister were our babysitters. He actually came over one night with her, the night my first sister was born (1959). I remember him playing street football with some of the guys in the neighborhood too. My folks just saw him and his wife at her mother's funeral and they were joking around about him coming over while she was babysitting.

I saw Brian "the Rasta Monsta" Grant coming out of the old Costco in Tualatin, which was later rennovated into the Blazer's practice facility.

I also sat near Bill Russell in the SPU gym during the summer of '85. He was there watching/coaching Sam Bowie during the Blazer's summer league.

And we saw Telly Savalis at Disneyland back in the early '70s. Who loves ya, baby?

Re: Odd famous person sighting

As a veteran of several celebrity golf rounds, I won't bother to name the many sports figures that I have met briefly while getting autographs and the like. However, in the spirit of the thread, here are a few of my "chance encounters" from over the years:

Fred Schneider (B-52s)--nearly ran him over with my car while he was jaywalking in Gainesville. To make amends, I escorted him to a nearby used record store.

Bruce Springsteen--somehow got on the same Hyatt elevator with he and his bodyguards. My guess is that they are now his "former" bodyguards.

Men at Work lead singer (yeah, the guy with the eye)--while buying greeting cards, he kept offering me an autograph when I made it clear that I did not want one.

Ted Turner--walked along side him to the TAC-Air General Aviation Terminal.

Justin Heyward (Moody Blues)--from backstage, he gave me the "thumbs up" while witnessing me sneaking into his concert at Chastain Park in Atlanta.

Randy "Macho Man" Savage--working out at gym in Lexington.

Elizabeth Shue--playing with her kids at "Kids Place" in Lexington (like Chuck E. Cheese).

Rollie Massimino--sat next to him at a bar in Times Square after Villanova was upset in the first round of the Big East Tournament.

Wayne Newton--walking around in a subtle, canary-yellow blazer at the old Lowes-Anatole Hotel in Dallas.

Will Smith & Tommy Lee Jones--Central Park one evening while filming "Men in Black II."

Lewis Grizzard--Lexington bookstore (go figure).
