Sounds like Jr would like to be dealt.

from ESPN

Quote:
Ken Griffey Jr. believes he will be traded before the Aug. 31 deadline. He can veto any trade, per his 10-and-five rights (10 years in the majors, five with the same team), but he says, "logically, they (the Reds) are going to get a better deal now than at the end of the season."
Since if Jr doesn't want to be traded he isn't going anywhere it is safe to assume this is a bug in the ear of the front office that he would welcome a deal to a contender.

What will Wayne do? My hunch is he's looking to stand pat for the most part and attempt to make a run at the division next year.

Re: Sounds like Jr would like to be dealt.

The problem is Jay Bruce is coming and not much can be done about that.

I think Griffey is traded because Wayne is forced to win next year. With the farm about ready to provide Votto and Bruce(with a surprise or two like Lopez or Rosales maybe mixed in for depth). The Reds won't miss Griffey's bat a whole lot and they get a far younger athlete in the outfield moving ahead Wayne's desires for a athletic outfield. "Standing pat" won't work for the Reds next year. Though most of the guys traded biggest return will be dumping their salaries at their age. Then Wayne must improve the pitching over the offseason.

Cast's attitude is a problem and not a good environment for GM's(which explains why Wayne is GM in the first place). Wayne will need some good stuff to happen. Finding a decent left handed starter is a necessity, improvements to Bailey are critical and Arroyo must pitch better. If that happens, he may have a chance.

The bullpen needs power arms to pitch in GAB.

If it doesn't work, he will be canned ASAP and we start anew again. Very little wiggleroom with Cast as President.

Re: Sounds like Jr would like to be dealt.

I won't be shocked if Wayne's play is to make another run at building a bullpen this winter and calling it good for an '08 run. Maybe he adds another starter too. Point is, I'm not sure Wayne sees a need to trade off the big offensive guns of Dunn and Junior. He likely see this squad as 4 or 5 bullpen arms away from contention.

Exactly, and that goes back to Bob who sounds to me like he's given orders to win NOW.

Same ole same ole down by the river.

Re: Sounds like Jr would like to be dealt.

I read into it that he is "resigned to being dealt" rather than he'd "like to be dealt." It's a small point, but it is significant for Junior's legacy in Cincinnati. It's the difference between "he couldn't wait to get out of Cincinnati" and "he accepted a trade because he understands that trades are part of the business."

If Jr wants to remain playing ST in Florida, then I'd imagine his possibilities are: Braves, Red Sox, Indians, Tigers, Dodgers, Mets and Yankees.

Re: Sounds like Jr would like to be dealt.

I wouldn't bet against Jr. being traded tomorrow. I posted in another thread that I firmly believe he is gone by the end of July.

Atlanta is my best guess. With Sr. having undergone surgery today for Prostate Cancer that has spread and his Mom still recovering from Colon Cancer he probably want to be VERY close to home and still on a winning team.

I'm thinking Jr. goes back to Seattle as part of the feel good story of the summer.

If there is a God, Junior won't ever play for the Braves. He could play for any of the other 29 teams in MLB and that would be ok.

But if he ever has to put on that tomahawk jersey & cap, then God is officially dead.

Personally I don't think Krivsky will be back next year.. I really believe Walt Jockerty will be here.

Braves - Most Likely Destination? I respect what TC says but I have my doubts the Braves would add the salary.

Red Sox - Unlikely they have enough offense, and the division sewn up.

Indians - Possible but unlikely, again it's about $$$

Tigers - I like the match and they still need a potent LH bat, this could work.

Mets - Maybe they have had an awful lot of injuries in the COF and problems with their offense most notably LH Delgado and Beltran

Yankees - Nah, just don't see that happening. We all know Jr's feelings about the Yankees and more specifically Steinbrenner. Notice Jr has had Trey with him in the dugout most of the season, that won't happen in NY.

Let me toss out one team under the radar that may not have any interest unless the Reds would toss some $$$'s their way but if so would make for an interesting combination. Not saying they would do it, but would Griffey? Normally I would say no but with his parents problems and his desire to be in a more competitive situation and it's probably worth considering for all involved.

Florida Marlins:

Obviously closest to home.
Only 7 GB of 1st in the division.
His presence would likely put "meat in the seats", along with his "chase".
His bat is an obvious need behind Ramirez and Uggla and ahead of Cabrera.
The Reds would have a shot at getting a solid return.

Great post. Pretty good synopsis. I think Detroit is the best "fit". But for reasons beyond Baseball I think it will be Atlanta.

How about Griffey, Lohse, EE, and Weathers for Arod?
