Cubs trade for Jason Kendall
The Chicago Cubs have acquired catcher Jason Kendall from the Oakland Athletics for catcher Rob Bowen and minor league pitcher Jerry Blevins.
Kendall is expected to be in uniform for the Cubs for Tuesday night's game against the Giants. Kendall, 33, is batting .226 with 2 home runs, 10 doubles and 22 RBIs in 92 games this year. Bowen, 26, was acquired from San Diego, along with minor league outfielder Kyler Burke, for catcher Michael Barrett and cash considerations on June 20. Blevins, 23, has gone 3-2 with nine saves and a 1.02 ERA between Single-A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee this season. Last edited by Mainspark; 07-16-2007 at 09:01 PM. |

Re: Cubs trade for Jason Kendall
If the Cubs took the whole salary, this is a win for the A's.

IMO, it's a win for the A's even if they didn't. Addition by subtraction.

I would think the A's just wanted out from under the salary, now Suzuki can become their starter at catcher.

Why would you give up anything so you can pay Kendall that much cash to stink it up?

Re: Cubs trade for Jason Kendall
sounds like a big win for Beane. I don't see why the Cubs need a high salary guy like Kendall. He's washed up.

Re: Cubs trade for Jason Kendall
Well apparently guys who play good defense, but have no stick at all are ok to carry as long as the pitchers like them. Once they stop though, the party's over.

Re: Cubs trade for Jason Kendall
The As have already paid half of the $8M they owe for Kendall's '07 and they've sent cash with him to Chicago (my guess is probably $2M which would be half of the remaining $4M on the contract). Basically this is classic Beane giving a guy away to save what most GMs might consider pocket change. To Beane saving $2M (and that's hypothetical because we don't really know how much cash went with Kendall) for a player he has no use for is a huge victory though.

Jason Kendall vs. Koyie Hill.
Who would you rather have behind the plate? |

Re: Cubs trade for Jason Kendall
Unless Jason Kendall arrived in a DeLorean from the year 2000, this is probably a win for the As.
