In a 1962 season in which the Reds came 3.5 games from winning the pennant, this game was most disappointing because of the lack of Frank Robinson being in the lineup. I was 13 years old at the time and remember asking my father why the Reds would play Lynch over Robby? He had no answer except to say that Lynch was the best pinch hitter of all time. Interesting tidbit...if I'm not mistaken O'Toole finished strong that year, going 8-2 to end the season after this game. Back when a pitcher's W-L record meant something.

Robinson pinch-ran for Lynch in the 7th after Lynch doubled off the CF wall, and he scored on Coleman's second HR. He then stayed in the game in LF, and had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 11th to cut the deficit to 6-5.

I can only guess that Robbie wasn't in the starting lineup because Hutch wanted to give him a rest--it was the first game the entire season that Robinson hadn't started.

But I can understand the disappointment of a 13-year-old kid in wondering why the best player on the team wasn't in the game.

How would RZ have reacted to that lineup?

Hard to believe that team only finished 10 games under .500.

Obviously Ray Knight didn't get the memo on splitting up the lefties--the first six batters hit left-handed!
