Harang update

Thanks to Rob Butcher for the information...

Aaron Harang left last night’s start after 5 batters with soreness in his lower back. His MRI this morning revealed no structural damage to his lower back.

He will not travel with the team to Washington but possibly could pitch in Pittsburgh. He was scheduled to pitch Thursday in Washington.

More information will be available after Harang is examined in a few days.

You can list our rotation in Washington as Lohse, Arroyo and TBA.

You are probably right that it will be him, but I think it will be very ugly for him in the majors.

5.34 K/9
3.66 BB/9
0.69 HR/9

4.31 FIP
0.97 GB/FB
4% HR/FB
.269 BAPIP

Basically, Dumatrait's apparent success in Louisville has been mainly attributable to luck. His control has been iffy, while his K's have been low. Dumatrait is unfortunately due for a major regression as he hasn't been all that great of a pitcher in AAA.

Move him to the majors, and I think Dumatrait will be lucky to put up an ERA in the 5.00's. It doesn't matter at this point in the season anyways, but I think Dumatrait is in need of a major role change. He's at the point where I simply don't see him improving a whole lot. As a reliever his decent stuff may become an asset. He has been more effective as a lefty, so perhaps he could thrive as a specialist depending on how well he takes to the pen.

Good points--will he be a tweener like Belisle, or will he be a Coutlangus ceiling reliever, or neither?

Reds saying he should be back quickly. Great. We'll see him in April.

Fine by me VR. If there is any question at all, err on the side of caution. This season has been flat-lined for long enough now to call it over. No need to emperil future seasons. Harang's health must be the paramount consideration...

The last time Aaron Harang had a sore back he was DL'd from June 4-26, 2004. The man who replaced him? The one, the only (drum roll, please)... Todd Van Poppel for 4 starts.

The REDS were 3-1 in Van Poppel's 4 starts in the place of Harang... with Todd's 5.09 ERA in those starts. Should have been a 4-0 record if not for a Danny Graves blown save in the loss.

Absolutely! If there's even a hint of a problem that might be aggravated I'd shut him down the rest of the year and never even blink about it. Risk an asset like Harang for a season like this? Take all the time he wants.

Agree 100% I woldn't mind if he skiped a bunch of starts to make absoultey shure the most valuable asset in the Reds orgization is healthy well into the future.

Re: Harang update

Agree that Harang is by far the Reds most valuable guy right now. This is concerning to me because Harang seemed to step forward when he got himself into a little better shape physically. Maybe its just my imagination, but Harang seems to have gained some of his weight back. He'll never be skinny minnie, but I wonder if a few added pounds isn't the source of his back pain.

Since there seems to be a correlation with Harang's conditioning and his effectiveness, I hope he gets some weight off. His pitching may be totally unaffected but it may help his back. I'd skip some starts while his back heals and maybe tweek his conditioning program at the same time.

There seems to be a lot of guys on the pitching staff that need to lose a few pounds. The story about Coffey losing weight and then becoming an effective pitcher was discussed a lot the last couple of years. Coffey also seems significantly bigger in 2007 than he was in 2006. I wonder if his loss of effectiveness is a coincidence.

Am I imagining this or have a few of the Reds pitchers gotten bigger than in the past? Even Weathers looks a little bigger to me (though it hasn't hurt his pitching).
