Jonny Gomes available?

Here's a new name for you, courtesy of ESPN's Jayson Stark: Tampa Bay's Jonny Gomes. I've always been a huge Gomes fan; he mashed .282/.372/.534 as a rookie in 2005. Then he had a ridiculous 11 HR April before succumbing to a shoulder injury. Gomes had offseason surgery and started off slow for the D-Rays, earning a demotion to Triple A.

Gomes hit five homers in June and another five this month, despite getting just 132 ABs over that span. The Devil Rays are finally starting to play him regularly, but that's partially because of Carl Crawford's injury. I would not be shocked to see Gomes offer similar production to Jermaine Dye for the balance of the season, and you can keep him for several years cheaply. He's going to be the steal of the day if traded.

Stark says that the Rays are getting more calls on Elijah Dukes than Gomes, however.

Jonny Gomes is a lot like Cantu. Terrible defender, HR hitter. Jonny does have a little bit better history with OBP. Still, he's likely a worse defender with his only position being DH. We don't have one of those in our league.

Yeah, um...I'm actually going to have to...disagree with you on that.

Gomes is way not Cantu. He's mini-Dunn. Big power. Exceptional historical IsoD rates. Decent functional speed. K's a lot. He plays RF pretty well (.879 career ZR) when Tampa Bay is smart enough to get him in the lineup (too infrequently). Should they smarten up and give him regular PT, he'd most likely be the best offensive player on the club. But I'd given up long ago on Tampa smartening up.

Free Jonny Gomes. Free him.

From our old friend, Marc Lancaster.

Quote:
ESPN’s Jayson Stark has thrown Jonny Gomes' name out as an alternative to Wily Mo Pena, whom the Red Sox would love to dump. Though Stark mentions the Rays have had more calls inquiring about Elijah Dukes than Gomes, it’s my understanding that there’s no chance Dukes will be moved today.
Here's his blog.

Re: Jonny Gomes available?

If he's ever healthy again for a few consecutive minutes, the D-Rays should trade Rocco Baldelli. Should have moved him during the offseason.

The other guy that team might do well to move right now is Akinori Iwamura. He's a banjo hitter and Evan Longoria is probably going to take the 3B job during spring training next season, but Iwamura got off to a hot start and some team might fall in love with what it thinks his BA will be.

Re: Jonny Gomes available?

Gomes = Russ Branyan. No GM wants to be judged by the public (or his announcer......) for giving a full time job to a guy who hits .240, strikes out 200 times, and plays mediocre at best defense, even if he is ultimately more productive than some other option.
