Reds North?

From Rotoworld.com:

Quote:
Blue Jays recalled IF Ray Olmedo from Triple-A Syracuse.

Olmedo takes the place of Royce Clayton, who was designated for assignment. He'll serve as a utility man and could get some playing time at shortstop in place of John McDonald.
There is a team that could use Alex Gonzalez. Does anyone think Paul Janish could step in next year and be the starter in Cincinnati? If so, dealing Gonzalez (and his contract) could net us a near ready pitching prospect like Ricky Romero. What do you think?

Janish would likely be a downgrade offensively believe it or not.

Saves money and adds to the future...I'm in. It's not like Gonzalez is the difference between the playoffs and the basement.

He currently has 35 EBH in 318 ab's. If he reaches 450 AB's at that pace he'll be around #13, and like Larkin in 1991 getting an EBH about every 9 ab's.

Old and scrappy. Better not let Wayne see that.

Re: Reds North?

I'd move Gonzo in a heartbeat for a decent prospect.

I wouldn't be looking to give him away for free, simply because we have no other options (Thanks Wayne ) But if Gonzo can bring you a potential future ML player, you do it.

Re: Reds North?

I'm not a big Janish fan. I really think you cannot have to sub-Mendoza line hitters in the 7-8 holes, with the pitcher in the 9 hole.

Re: Reds North?

I don't really see how we can get rid of Gonzalez right now. Our middle infield depth at AAA and the majors is horrible. Keppinger could play SS but I'm sure how comfortable I am with him there every day. We also have Pedro Lopez when he gets back but I'm not sure about him either. To be honest I really don't know too much about Lopez or Keppinger's game as I haven't been able to watch the Reds too much this year living out of state.

And to address Janish I don't see how he could hit over .200 in the majors right now. Gonzalez gives us quite a bit more than that, especially with some of his success this year.

The only other good option to Gonzalez would be Brandon Phillips and why mess with him at 2b when he's doing fine.

Re: Reds North?

Paul Janish is struggling batting under .200 at Louisville. Janish will never be a good hitter , his glove is good but not spectacular.

PlayerFull Name: Paul Ryan Janish
Born: 10/12/1982
Birthplace: Houston, TX
College: Rice
Height: 6' 2"
Weight: 190
Bats: R
Throws: R

2007 Season
Team League AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS
CHA SOU .244 88 324 46 79 21 2 1 20 107 50 54 10 3 .358 .330 .688
LOU INT .179 24 78 8 14 1 0 0 5 15 6 12 1 0 .247 .192 .439
Minors .231 112 402 54 93 22 2 1 25 122 56 66 11 3 .338 .303 .641

At 25 , this winter I don't honestly believe we are going to see him become a hitter. If he has a major league future its as a Juan Castro type player. Sorry even that may be a reach.

Re: Reds North?

I'm fine with Gonzo. After this year he only has 2 years left on his deal and if youwant to trade him, there are teams that are always looking for good defense with a major league stick at SS. Let me clarify that last statement. I know that Gonzo isn't going to make anyone forget Larkin at the plate but you know what he can do whereas you have teams that take chances with 22 year olds out of the Dominican or wherever who are pretty slick with the glove but can't hit yet. Managers may want a little more security at SS even if he is a rental.

Re: Reds North?

Yeah, let me make it clear, I don't want to dump Gonzalez. I think he's a fine major league shortstop, I'm just trying to look around the team, and then the rest of the league to see what we have in place that other teams might want / need this offseason. SS is certainly a position that about 1/2 or more of the teams in the majors could afford to upgrade.

Having said that, that means that the Reds currently employ a player that is as good or better than 1/2 of the teams in MLB. I'm fine with keeping him, but if you've got someone near ready that you think can replace him, and can get a real nice return for him I think you should move him this offseason. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the Reds have that fallback option.

Re: Reds North?

I like M2's idea of snagging Bixler from Pittsburgh.

Trade Gonzo to Toronto for a minor prospect. Maybe make it a three-way if there's anyone Pittsbugh has any interest in within Toronto's system.

Re: Reds North?

I've seen Brian Bixler a lot here this season. He's a solid journeyman type ss , does a little of everything. But at 25 , before next season I get the feeling he's not going to be anything above average at best in the bigs .

He's the scrappy type , that I think some fans look at as being better than they really are.

Re: Reds North?

Riccardi said this week the Jays are happy with John McDonald as their SS. He didn't say that they were not looking for anyone else, but he made it clear that McDonald had won the job this year and they were giving hm the rest of the year to solidify it.
