Tiger shoots 63 at PGA

Tiger just lipped out a birdie putt on the 18th green at Southern Hills to shoot a 63.

No player has ever shot a 62 in a major. He missed that last putt by fractions of an inch. The ball was halfway in the hole and spun out.

One of the greatest exhibitions of golf I've ever seen. He was pouring them in from everywhere.

The problem with Tiger is that he has no sense of drama. IIRC, he's never lost a tournament after being ahead after 54 holes and maybe even 36 holes too. The PGA is as good as his now and everybody knows it so why watch?

Sergio Garcia was wounded so badly he signed an incorrect scorecard and earned himself a pretty DQ.

That seems like a pretty basic thing, yet it's happened in a few tournaments that I can remember. How do they keep score and what would cause him to sign an incorrect scorecard?

Basically the caddy puts down the score for each hole. How this happens is if the caddy accidentally puts down the wrong score and then the player signs the card he is disqualified. If Garcia would have caught the error they could have corrected it but once he signs the card it is a disqualification.

In a tourney, you exchange scorecards with other players in your group.

In today's example, Garcia was playing with Boo Weekley. Weekley kept Garcia's card, and vice versa. Sometimes the caddie of the other player keeps the card, but bottomline, you never have your own official scorecard. On the 17th hole, Boo wrote "4" on Sergio's card when Sergio really got a "5". Sergio never double checked that what Boo had on the official scorecard was accurate, signed his card with the lower score, left the scoring area, only later to return to realize that Boo had written the wrong number for the 17th hole.

When you sign a scorecard with a lower score than you really scored, you're DQ'd. When you sign a scorecard with a higher score than you really scored, you're stuck with the higher score.

Basically, Garcia was lazy, didn't double check the hole by hole scores, and cost himself some coin.

It's not Boo Weekley's fault, it's Sergio Garcia's.

Now let me ask you this: Is there some "gamesmanship" that goes on where a player or caddy intentionally puts down a wrong score just in case the other player doesn't check? I would imagine that if that does happen it would be more likely to happen at the lower levels of golf.

I'm sure that's not what happened here, but just wondering if that is something that has been known to happen?

I've never heard of that, but you never know.

I've played in hundreds of tournaments. Mistakes in scoring happen all the time. I would say nearly 20% of the time something is goofed up on the scorecard. Here's why:

Players/caddies are so involved in their own games that they sometimes don't pay much, if any, attention to their playing partners. So, they just assume they made a certain and write it down.

After the round, the players go the scoring tent to exchange scorecards back with signatures.

When I get my card back, I sign it immediately so I don't forget that part. Then, I check my scorecard twice, hole by hole.

Sergio got DQ'd because he was lazy. He didn't check his scores because he was probably upset with his round.

I can honestly say I was lazy one time and got DQ'd in a Golden Bear event. I shot a 75 or so in the second round and knew I was going to miss the cut (missing the cut is a miserable experience by the way). I signed my card without looking because it really didn't matter what I shot. After the guy totaled the score, I knew it was wrong and informed him. He immediately wrote a big DQ on my card. It was a good lesson learned because I was sure not to do that again. At least it didn't cost me any money.
