Shearn up...Saarloos down...

Today the Reds selected from Louisville the contract of RHP Tom Shearn (#64) and optioned to Louisville RHP Kirk Saarloos.

Shearn, a graduate of Briggs High School in Columbus, will start this afternoon's game against the Marlins in his Major League debut after 12 seasons and 352 apps in the minors...on Tuesday he will celebrate his 30th birthday...he will be the oldest Reds player to make his Major League debut since CF Greg Tubbs made his first career appearance on 8/1/93 vs SD at 30 years, 335 days old and the oldest Reds pitcher since Pat Scantlebury was 38 years, 160 days old when he started against the Cardinals on 4/19/56.

Glad to see one of the organizational soldiers finally get a shot. Go get 'em, Tom.

If by soldiers you mean roster filler...then yes. He's only been in the system 4 of his 12 or so years.

It is nice to see him get a start, and I hope he performs well.
That said..It would be bad to imagine him starting the rest of the year.

...And thus ends any hope that the recent hot streak may have inspired.

Re: Shearn up...Saarloos down...

Hooray for Tom Shearn. Right now he's through 7 with 3 runs allowed. He may not repeat it, but he sure saved the Reds today and has a memory for a lifetime.

And Ryan Jorgenson with a Grand Slam. Today's game is an example of why teams shouldn't overpay for junk (like say $1.2 Million for a recently DFA'd pitcher). Cheap options are out there. They may prove to be junk also, but at least you've saved some bucks for the more important stuff.

Re: Shearn up...Saarloos down...

I like Shearn better than Bobby L. Similar pitchers but Shearn, I feel has better command. I see no reason he can't be a reasonably successful number 5 for a couple of seasons.
