That game proved to be McLain's final big league appearance.
McLain entered the game to start off the top of the 9th inning for the Braves. He promptly allowed a HR to Cesar Geronimo before allowing singles to Joe Hague and Pete Rose. He threw a total of 4 pitches to the 3 batters. Johnny Bench homered in this game and would go on a tear and hit 8 HR's in his next 11 games to give him 40 HR's for the season. |

I went to this game. The Reds entered this series against the Giants needing a sweep if they had any chance at all to win the division. They won a close one on friday night but Will Clark ended hope in the first with a two run homer. Rick Reuschel did his usual thing against the Reds and the season was basically over.
