Oakland's Dan Haren may be traded

According to mlbtraderumors.com, he may be traded this winter. Oakland is looking for a 3B, a SS, and/or a top pitching prospect. While I would be cautious acquiring a veteran pitcher from Billy Beane (Mulder, Zito), and equally cautious letting him pluck a prospect from us, I would see what he'd be interested in. Remember, we did get Harang from him.

Could an offer of Alex Gonzalez, Drew Stubbs and Johnny Cueto get it done? Probably not, but it may be a start.

It would certainly be something to consider.

Re: Dan Haren

Just typed these words this morning:

"Anyway, the market for prospects has never been higher. If the right opportunity presents itself, the Reds have what the market wants."

This is exactly the sort of scenario I was talking about.

Re: Dan Haren

Don't they have Chavez at 3B?

I'd love to land Haren.

Re: Dan Haren

Would you give up Alex Gonzalez, EE, and Cueto for him? I think that might be what it will take.

Which puts Keppinger at SS, and Freel at 3B [free agent signings not withstanding].

Tough call, but yeah, I'd do it.

Chavey is finally undergoing surgery to try and get his back fixed. He's under contract through 2010, so I'm not sure they're really in the market for anything more than a rental there.

That said, I'd love to get Haren and would part with one of the big 2 pitching prospects to make it happen.

Re: Dan Haren

They'd probably want Chavez and his contract included in a deal.

Haren is an ace-in-the-making, though, so it would be worth the cash.

Re: Dan Haren

Just a guess, but I bet Billy Beane has a yen for Joey Votto.

Considering that Haren is economically signed through 2010, Beane's valuation of prospects isn't likely to be be dramatically influenced by the rest of the league, and the thing more highly valued than prospects is youngish, above average starters who economically give you over 200 IP, I'm thinking Gonzo, Stubbs, and Cueto doesn't even get past Beane's secretary.

Requesting Haren probably starts with Bruce+......

Re: Dan Haren

How about Bruce for Harren straight up?

I'd do it.

Then he's not trading Haren to anyone. I agree that this may just be smoke (either media smoke or Beane-emitted smoke), but if he actually wants to get a raft of kids in return for Haren then he'd better be willing keep talking after the Reds inform him that Bruce isn't available at any price.

I don't know, he seems to be overloaded on 1B/corner OF's (Johnson, Barton, Swisher, Buck)

I would think he would have a yen for Stubbs, with his defense and ability to take a walk.

Re: Dan Haren

Beane isn't an idiot and rarely makes foolish trades. He let the big three go in 3 years I believe and neither of the 3 have been able to touch what they were with the A's. If Haren is signed through 2010 to a good deal there is no way I move a top prospect for Haren. Beane must know something that doesn't bode well for the future of Haren.

Just like he "knew" something about Harang?

I agree you must proceed with caution when dealing with Billy Beane, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't proceed at all. Tim Hudson had a pretty good year with the Braves this year if I'm not mistaken. And I don't think the Braves rue the day they gave up Juan Cruz to get him.
