"Minor" Moves

C Trent -

Quote:
RHP Tom Shearn and C Alvin Colina cleared waivers and were outrighted to Class AAA Louisville.

Shearn last season went 7-10 with a 4.20 ERA in 24 starts and 2 relief appearances at Louisville and 3-0 with a 4.96 ERA in 6 starts and 1 relief appearance for the Reds. Colina was claimed off waivers from the Colorado Rockies on September 11. He appeared in 80 games for Class AAA Colorado Springs.

No way, Bowden wouldn't let a former "Bowden Red" slide out of his system.

I'm actually a bit suprised Shearn cleared waivers.

me too, he couldve pitched out of the bullpen I feel. He was 10 times better than Saarloos, is he still on the team or minors?

It appears they both accepted assignment to Louisville.

If I were Shearn I would have absolutely accepted my shot in Louisville. He knows how bad this teams bullpen has been and knows he has a good shot of getting back to Cincinnati.

Re: "Minor" Moves

Like the arc of his yakker, Shearn takes a U-turn to AAA.

Re: "Minor" Moves

Tom Shearn had a nice little run in which he allowed a 5.00 ERA over 7 appearances. Unfortunately, everything suggests that he was quite lucky to have even that much success.

He doesn't have great control.
He doesn't strike anybody out.
He's a fly ball pitcher.

He allowed an insanely low, fully unrepeatable, 13% LD rate. His 79.9% LOB% was higher than any qualified pitcher in baseball.

I'm sure his curveball fools lots of guys in AAA. Give him 100 IP in the major leagues and I'd put $100 of a 6.00+ ERA. He's a fringy guy when he's lucky and a AAA stalwart when he's not. Great filler for Louisville, but don't expect anything beyond an emergency starter who might not embarrass you.

Bingo.

Shearn isn't a viable option for the rotation in 2008. He could easily be an emergency call-up starter, though.
