Re: Coaching staff...

Per C. Trent's blog:

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Reds today announced that Major League coaches Mark Berry, Billy Hatcher, Brook Jacoby and Dick Pole along with bullpen catcher Mike Stefanski will be offered contracts for the 2008 season.
The club also announced that bullpen coach Tom Hume will not be offered a contract and that bench coach Pat Kelly has been reassigned within the organization.
The bullpen coach and bench coach vacancies on new manager Dusty Baker's staff will be filled in the near future.

Wow. That's not the major house-cleaning that I assumed would take place. I figured Pole and Jacoby were safe and the rest of them had to clean up their resumes.

Re: Coaching staff...

How Mark Berry keeps a Major League job is beyond me? I know that for the last 3 seasons he has done all of the "scripting" for ST. Very tedious task that no one wants to do. If they are keeping him around just for that then I have got to ask some serious questions!!!

I also believe the coaches knew their fates a few days ago. Literally the day Dusty was hired. Just not sure that Dusty was able to get a hold of everyone before his press conference. Just my belief.

I hope all this works out. As I recall, the Reds pitching wasn't too good this past season.

Berry is a superb 3B coach. Very, very rarely have I seen him send or hold a runner and thought he was wrong. According to Dick Pole, he's the only coach he's know of to make a videotape study of the opposing outfielder's arms. I like Berry. Thrilled Hume is gone--he's the one I'm surprised had a job with the utter hideousness of the bullpen in recent years.

.

Why so much carryover? Has Krivsky talked Baker into taking them because he's already got them working cheap and he knows they are afraid to ask for a raise larger than 2%??? Now Baker says he wants continuity from the coaching staff so the players can continue learning what the have already started learning. What a bunch of baloney. What has this club accomplished over the last several seasons?

IMO, it really strikes me as the guy who was the best at doing his job on the 2007 coaching staff is out of a job. Those guys in the pen are really going to miss Tom Hume. He's been a Dad, a big brother and a mentor to those guys in the pen year after year. He's been a great friend to everyone in the clubhouse.

Grant Jackson turned 65 yrs old a few weeks ago. Maybe he wants to kick back and reduce the traveling. He'd be a great addition though.

Tho I was initially unhappy with Baker getting the job, one of the 'selling points' to myself was the realization that Baker's arrival would usher in my long awaited end to seeing Mark Berry on the coaching staff. How does Berry keep the job? Ive been wondering that for years. He must be agreeing to a yearly pay cut.

Re: Coaching staff...

Berry, Hatcher, and Stefanski i'm fine with.. Hume should of went along with Narron. I like the carry over.. I'm interested in knowing who Dusty is bringing in to fill the holes at bench and bullpen..

Re: Coaching staff...

The expanded version from C Trent -

Quote:
CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Reds today announced that Major League coaches Mark Berry, Billy Hatcher, Brook Jacoby and Dick Pole along with bullpen catcher Mike Stefanski will be offered contracts for the 2008 season.

The club also announced that bullpen coach Tom Hume will not be offered a contract and that bench coach Pat Kelly has been reassigned within the organization.

The bullpen coach and bench coach vacancies on new manager Dusty Baker's staff will be filled in the near future.

Berry will return for his 25th season in the organization and for his 10th year on the Major League coaching staff. He has been the club’s third base coach the last 4 seasons.

Hatcher has been with the organization for 2 years, both as first base coach.

Jacoby and Pole will return for their second seasons as hitting coach and pitching coach, respectively.

Stefanski will return for his fifth straight season as bullpen catcher.

Hume was with the organization for 11 seasons as bullpen coach and for 1 season (2006) as pitching coach.

Kelly will return as manager of the organization's Gulf Coast League Sarasota affiliate and as director of Florida on-field operations, positions he held last season until he was named interim manager Pete Mackanin's bench coach on July 3.

Re: Coaching staff...

I read somewhere that Dusty Baker believes consistency in a coaching staff is important so you can build trust. If the Reds replaced Jacoby, I think it would've been Dunn's fifth hitting coach over five years.

I kept hearing this and thought that can't be correct because Chambliss was here for three seasons. I finally tracked it down on a sidebar in the DDN from last year; he has been five coaches in five seasons (counting Ray Knight who finished out 2003 as hitting coach/3rd base coach) - six total since he started in the big leagues.

Quote:
Hitting coaches

* Chris Chambliss (2004-06)
* Tom Robson (2003)
* Jim Lefebvre (2002)
* Ken Griffey Sr. (1997-2001)
So he's had six coaches since he began in the majors.
