Edmonds Traded to Padres In Salary Dump

It's been reported that Edmonds and dough (at least $1M, as major leagur approval is required) has been trade to the Pads for a 24 year old A thirdbaseman named David Freese.

Depending on the money, it's fairly clear that Edmonds had negative trade value, as the value of the prospect is unlikely to be worth the value of the money sent.

It looks like the Cards are waiving the white flag, as their only chance to contend seemed to depend on the return to decent health of guys like Rolen, Mulder and Edmonds.

Edmonds is past his prime and injury-prone. I can see Scott Rolen going in a similar deal.

Without a bunch of significant signings, it seems pretty likely that the Cards plan to rebuild in 2008.

With what?

They have an (almost) barren farm system.

Rasmus is very good, but likely at least a half year away.

No one else looks capable of contributing until 2009 at the earliest.

George Grande will miss his frequent trips to Cincy.

If the Cards are in rebuild mode, do they have any pitching that can help the Reds?

Re: Edmonds Traded to Padres In Salary Dump

I guess those that thought the Cardinals were closer to contending that Cincinnati and Milwaukee were mistaken. The Cards don't even believe they can compete.

The Reds should finish, no worse than, second in the central in 2008.

Eh, I don't know. If the season started today, I'm not sure how you could say the Reds would be favored to finish 2nd. Even with losing Cordero and Linebrink, I still think the Brewers as of right now are better than the Reds.

Coming into the season there were concerns about whether he could stick in CF, but apparently he made big strides and now is playing CF well above average.... so yes, he can catch. Personally, I have him as the #2 prospect in baseball. He had a sickness in the middle of the season that caused him to lose 10-15 pounds mid season and he struggled during that time. Once he was healthy again, he raked. Pretty much though he should be a consensus Top 10 prospect in baseball no matter where you look as the lists begin to roll out all offseason.

Finally, the Padres have a replacement for Cameron.
