Lineup Construction?

I can't figure out how Dusty is going to stack the lineup this year, especially with Votto, and if Bruce makes the team out of spring training. What are some of your thoughts?

Without Bruce:

Freel/Hopper CF
Phillips 2B
Dunn LF
Encarnacion 3B
Griffey RF
Votto 1B
Gonzalez SS
Ross C

With Bruce:

Encarnacion 3B
Gonzalez SS
Dunn LF
Phillips 2B
Griffey RF
Bruce CF
Votto 1B
Ross C

Re: Lineup Construction?

Assuming Bruce starts the year with the Reds:

Votto
Encarnacion
Dunn
Griffey
Bruce
Phillips
Gonzalez
Ross/Valentine

I expect something more along the lines of (at least at first):
Phillips (he's fast)
Gonzalez ("professional bat handler")
Griffey
Dunn
Encarnacion
Votto
Bruce
Ross

I'm assuming that Bruce does not start right away. If he doesn't, you probably will get:

Freel
Phillips
Griffey
Votto
Dunn
Encarnacion
Gonzalez
Ross

Then it goes R-R-L-L-L-R-R-R. Kind of screwy and kind of looking at what he did in Chicago. When Bruce finally starts (and I hope it's soon), You'll probably see Phillips lead off and Brue bat fourth.

If I had to put money on any one lineup with the above 8 players, I think you've got it.

With Freel or Hopper:

Freel/Hopper
Phillips
Griffey
Encarnacion
Dunn
Gonzalez
Votto
Ross

Yuck.

My personal lineup looks like this:

1B Votto
3B Encarnacion
LF Dunn
RF Griffey
2B Phillips
CF Bruce
SS Gonzalez
C Ross

I think this topic is a reason that Bruce may be left in AAA at the start of the year. It enables the Reds to use Freel/Hopper as the obvious lead-off choice.

Its one of the reasons that I prefer a trade of EdE with some minor leaguers over the other players in any deal or a pitcher. Keppinger can lead-off at 3B and the team won't feel forced to hold Bruce back to make a spot for a lead-off guy.

I doubt the Reds do this but my line-up would be:

Bruce CF
EdE 3B
Dunn LF
Griffey RF
Phillips 2B
Votto 1B
Gonzalez SS
Ross C

Re: Lineup Construction?

My money's on Jay Bruce going north with the major league team.

I don;t think the Reds would have traded Hamilton if that wasn't the plan.

I expect that to be pretty close to the way it will be with Bruce in there. Maybe Votto and Gonzo are swapped but otherwise I think that will be accurate.

That is what I thought initially too. I just have a hunch listening to Dusty. When Dusty was asked he named Freel and Hopper and others who could surprise or something like that.

If he has a good spring I would agree. But if he hits .180 and looks overmatched in the spring, you have to believe he's going back to LOU. Because they have Freel and Hopper - 2 guys who can play CF and lead off and are scrappy and/or vets - they really don't need to take Bruce north unless he has a great spring. But injuries could change all that too. I'm not saying that Dusty is anti-youth but all things being equal he is probably going to go with a vet over a kid who hasn't had one AB in the Show and I would guess most managers would do the same.

Hopper vs lefties

vs RHP:
Votto
EE
Griffey
Phiilips
Dunn
Bruce
Ross
Gonzalez

vs LHP:
Hopper
Kep
EE
Phillips
Dunn
Ross
Bruce
Gonzalez

The idea is Griifey can't play 162 games and is MUCH better vs righties than lefties. So get Hopper in there vs lefties.
