Re: What should be/What WILL be the Reds Opening Day 25 man roster? (predictions etc.

I would like to see:

Batting order:

Bruce - CF
Keppinger - SS
Phillips - 2B
Dunn - LF
Encarnacion - 3B
Griffey - RF
Votto - 1B
Valentin - C

Rotation:

Harang
Fogg
Belisle
Arroyo
Bailey

Bullpen:

Cordero
Burton
Volquez
Roenike
Bray
Affeldt

Bench:

Hopper
Freel
Ross
Gonzalez
Hatteberg
Drew Anderson

Comments:

I would like to see this team just out of things being interesting.....not because I think it is a winning combination. I would try to sign Lofton to sit on the bench instead of Anderson.....but I seriously doubt that will happen.

I want the BP to be made up as I expressed above because I want to see as much heat in it as possible. I think there is value to having the other team know that their bench is going to have to face 95 mph+ fastballs with the game on the line.

I think there is zero chance that either Bailey or Volquez start the year in AAA. I just think that after an off season where a solid starter wasn't added and there was so much talk about the young arms, WK is going to make sure that youth is served. It also gives him and excuse if this team loses 92 games again.

Re: What should be/What WILL be the Reds Opening Day 25 man roster? (predictions etc.

Here is what I think based on the current roster.

Code:
Spot POS What I'd like	What is likely
1 C Ross Ross
2 1B Votto Votto
3 2B Phillips	Phillips
4 3B EdE EdE
5 SS Gonzo Gonzo
6 LF Dunn Dunn
7 CF Bruce Bruce
8 RF Griffey Griffey

9 LHPH Hatte Hatte
10 IF Keppy Keppy
11 U Freel Freel
12 OF Hopper Hopper
13 C Javy Javy

14 SP1 Harang Harang
15 SP2 Arroyo Arroyo
16 SP3 Belisle Belisle
17 SP4 Volquez Volquez
18 SP5 Fogg Fogg

19 CL Cordero Cordero
20 8th Weathers	Weathers
21 SU Burton Burton
22 LHSU Affeldt Affeldt
23 LOOGY Couter Stanton
24 Wildcard	Roenicke	Majewski
25 Long Rel	Salmon Coffey

DL 60 Livingston Livingston
DL 60 Castro Castro
DL 15 Bray Bray
DL 15 Sergio Sergio
I wouldn't mind seeing Bako for Ross if the Reds think he can benefit the young pitchers. I don't like what Ross adds on offense or defense, but if Bako isn't a defensive upgrade from a handling pitchers standpoint, may as well take the occasional homers. I'd like to see a deal or two to clear some chaff and maybe upgrade where possible. I still hope for a Blanton deal from the minor league ranks (Stubbs, Maloney, etc. not Cueto or Bailey) with Fogg pushed to long relief. I also prefer a lefty bat that can play somewhere other than 1B in place of Hatte and one of Hopper/Freel probably should go. I prefer keeping Freel over Hopper because of his versatility and his history of getting on base.

It's the ultimate Reds nightmare.

. . . and Junior is the center fielder while Mike Stanton gets the ball every inning.

So no one really thinks Mercker will make the team?

I think a lot of the bench and pen spots may ride on who the team can dump (and acquire) in late spring deals. I would imagine that Stanton, Freel and Hatte will be shopped. If Stanton goes, I could see Mercker going north.

Re: What should be/What WILL be the Reds Opening Day 25 man roster? (predictions etc.

I have a hard time playing "what I would like" just because I would like alot to happen. But I will try to make my "what the roster should be" list as realistic as I can make it. The "what the roster will be" list shouldn't be too hard, just follow the money/options trail.

What I expect the OD roster to look like, sans injuries of course.

Starters
1.) Harang
2.) Arroyo
3.) Belisle
4.) Fogg
5.) Bailey

Pen
6.) Cordero
7.) Weathers
8.) Affeldt
9.) Burton
10.) Stanton
11.) Bray/Coffey (This depends on the health of Bray, if he's ok he's in)

Starting 8
12.) Votto 1B
13.) Phillips 2B
14.) Griffey RF
15.) Dunn LF
16.) Encarnacion 3B
17.) Bruce CF
18.) Gonzales SS
19.) Ross C

Bench
20.) Hatteberg 1B
21.) Hopper OF
22.) Keppinger IF/UT
23.) Valentin C
24.) A. Phillips 1B/3B
25.) Freel OF/UT

What I would like to see: Based in large part to what's semi-realistic, I.E. Griffey is going nowhere but I wouldn't mind seeing it. Also I don't expect think anymore pitching acquisitions will happen, but again I wish they would.

Harang
Arroyo
Bailey
Belisle
Volquez

(Would love to see Cueto but it's a bit of a longshot, but shouldn't be)

Cordero
Burton
Affeldt
Weathers
Bray
Coffey

(Again like with Cueto, I would like to see McBeth and Roenicke make it but it's not realistic in my mind at this point.)

Lofton/Hopper CF
Votto 1B
Dunn LF
Phillips 2B
Griffey RF
Encarnacion 3B
Gonzales SS
Ross C

Hatteberg 1B
Kielty (Has he signed with anyone yet??) 4th OF
Keppinger UT
Valentin C
Freel 5th OF/UT
An. Phillips 1B/3B

(Would love to have Bruce up but again I think he's a longshot if we acquire a a Lofton/Crisp type)

I'm just curious because I don't know. Why would Bray be "in" by everyone's estimation? What have you seen that makes him the sure bet? To be frank, all I've seen is a guy who gives up lots of hits and runs. I'd just like to know what there is in Bray that everyone thinks is wonderful.

Re: What should be/What WILL be the Reds Opening Day 25 man roster? (predictions etc.

I would like to see:

Starting 8

Bruce - CF
Gonzo - SS
Phillips - 2B
Dunn - LF
Encarnacion - 3B
Griffey - RF
Votto - 1B
Ross - C

Rotation:

Harang
Fogg
Volquez
Arroyo
Bailey

Bullpen:

Cordero
Burton
Volquez
Roenike/Sergio
Bray
Affeldt
Belisle

Bench:

Hopper
Dickerson
Valentine
Keppy
Hatteberg

Thoughts
I think the reds go with 12 pitchers to start the season and I have a feeling that Bailey will impress this spring. I want to see Roenike on the roster but I think he sees a little time in AAA until someone goes down. I think if the rule V guy shows something he will find his way on the 25 man roster. Freel I want gone. His contract pays him too much and I would much rather see Hopper as the 4th OF and Keppy as the 5th IF. I put Dickerson on the roster as a defensive replacement and also a pinch runner. I think Dusty is going to stress good, smart, aggressive base running and I think Dickerson will find a spot doing that.

I think you have pretty much hit the nail on the head here, the only exception I could possibly see is Bailey possibly replacing Volquez in the starting five and then Volquez either starting in Long Relief/Spot Start in the Bullpen or either move to the number 5 spot and then Fogg gets moved to the pen to the same role as a spot starter/long reliever. This would mean that more than likely Coutlangous (sp?) would start the season at AAA. I truly think that Roenicke has really impressed the coaches and most everybody else this first week at Spring Training and barring him just flat out blowing it during the rest of the way, I think he may just have secured him a spot in Cincy on Opening Day, although he may be on a shorter leash than other as the Reds for the first time in quite sometime have guys competing for spots well after the season and have heat on the starters and relievers in AAA if they don't perform. This is something that I definitely like to have!

Don't think Bruce will be starting in CF on opening day. May not even be on the roster.

What should be/What WILL be the Reds Opening Day 25 man roster? (predictions etc.

My prediction of what will be:

Harang
Arroyo
Belisle
Volquez
Fogg

Cordero
Burton
Weathers
Affeldt
Coffey
Majik
Stanton

Ross
Votto
Phillips
Gonzo
EE
Dunn
Freel
Griffey

Hopper
Valentine
Kep
Hatteberg
Kenny Lofton or Corey Patterson

As to what I would like to see:

Harang
Arroyo
Belisle
Volquez
Fogg

Cordero
Burton
Weathers
Affeldt
.
.
.

Ross
Votto
Phillips
Gonzo
EE
Dunn
Bruce
Griffey

Hopper
Valentine
Kep
Hatteberg
Freel

As to the last three bullpen spots the three guys I want to see the least are Coffey, Stanton & Majik. I would like to see the spots go to whoever pitches the best this spring out of:
Coutlangas, McBeth, Salmon, Pelland & Roenicke.

I too would like to see either/both Hat or Freel traded if we got back someone who helped our bench more. ie RH power bat and more flexible LH bat
