Moonwalks and moonbases
Have you ever seen this map of the Apollo 11 moonwalks compared to a baseball diamond? it's interesting how little distance they actually traveled, with the exception of one sprint out to right-center field.

Re: Moonwalks and moonbases
I hadn't seen that. It's very clever. Thinking about how the Apollo 11 astronauts had to draw conclusions from such a small area of the moon makes me think of the cities that I only know from connecting on airline flights there.
A couple of months ago I watched the miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon" on DVD and I remember that the realization of how little surface area was being covered on foot was a big reason NASA sent the lunar rover along on later Apollo missions.

Re: Moonwalks and moonbases
If I was the first human to ever set foot on a planet other than Earth, I wouldn't venture very far from the vehicle that was supposed to take me home. No wonder they didn't get very far. I suspect the equipment they had at that time may have had a lot to do as well with how far they could get from the lunar lander.

FWIW, I just saw a replica of the lunar rover Saturday at the "Spruce Goose" museum here in Oregon
