Re: Jonathan Mayo projects the first 20 picks

Crow 'flashes three plus pitches' which means that he has a plus fastball and two pitches with potential.

If you judged rotations just on first names --

Aaron
Edinson
Shooter
Homer
Johnny

The Reds would have to be World Series contenders.

I just don't see bad mechanics when I look at Crow. There's no recoil, his elbow comes through in a good position, he doesn't throw across his body. Just don't see it. A little unorthodox in his rhythm, but it looks fine to me mechanically.

So the fact that his throwing elbow gets above his shoulder before he comes forward doesn't concern you?

I don't know, man. Looks like it stays pretty level with his shoulder to me.

As I stated, I definitely wouldn't mind taking Crow, but I think you take the more sure Smoak or Beckham unless you prefer, a term I usually use for NFL draft prospects which I am a guru in, a boom or bust prospect like Crow.

Re: Jonathan Mayo projects the first 20 picks

I'd still like the REDS to take Big Ten Pitcher-of-the-Year RHP Zach Putnam:

Putnam collects the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year award after going undefeated on the mound during the regular season. In 10 starts, the junior righty is 7-0 with six wins coming in league action. Putnam had back-to-back 12-strikeout outings to open Big Ten play and is tied for fourth in the conference with 65 overall K's this year.

Note that Zach Putnam was also 1st Team Big-Ten DH this year.

2008 Big Ten Conference Honors

FIRST TEAM
1B - Nate Recknagel, Michigan....Player of the Year
2B - Ben Wolgamot, Purdue
SS - Jason Christian, Michigan
3B - Nate Hanson, Minnesota
OF - Kyle Hudson, Illinois#
OF - Andrew Means, Indiana
OF - Matt Nohelty, Minnesota
C - Josh Phegley, Indiana#
DH - Zach Putnam, Michigan
SP - Matt Bashore, Indiana
SP - Chris Fetter, Michigan
SP - Zach Putnam, Michigan...Pitcher of the Year
SP - Matt Bischoff, Purdue
RP - Drew O'Neil, Penn State

Michigan hosts this year's Big Ten Tournament tomorrow, May 22nd.

Give me Smoak or give me death. Absolutely ripped and Switch hitter. We need a safe pick this time. Smoak or Beckham.

MILB.com describes him as having three plus pitches - a fastball that reaches 96 and he can maintain that velocity deep into games, his slider hits 87, and he's got a solid changeup. Here's what the report says about his mechanics:

He's got a slight flaw in his delivery, where his wrist flops or wraps in back. He usually comes out of it, but it makes it a little harder for him to pitch to the extension side.
That sounds like Volquez and Homer Bailey. Has anyone mentioned concerns for their health?

Is he the guy from Missouri? I don't like his motion at all. He seems to generate a lot of velocity from a weird arm action. If the Reds have to overhaul his delivery it wouldn't really be worth that high of a pick. The delivery kind of reminds me of Todd Coffey.

Reminder that Todd Coffey had TJ surgery.
