Re: Greater Fenway Park

Quick question here ... did anybody attend Saturday's game and sit in either section 534 or section 535?

The Red Sox, thanks largely to their streak-breaking championship in 2004, became cuddly, cute, popular, and attractive to great scads of casual fans who wanted to glom onto the gravy train.

There's nothing cuddly or cute about a team with a $133 million payroll. You can't be an underdog if you spend like the Kennedys. If the Red Sox - who struggled to draw one million fans under the penurious final seasons of Yawkey family ownership - were once a cold-water walk-up on Kenmore Square, they are now a gated compound on the Cape.

Oh, I know. The fans sing songs together and have other adorable rituals, and tend to overlook small things like the fact that Manny Ramirez is one of the most selfish, self-indulgent players in the game. Ah, c'mahn. He's a Sawk.

Re: Greater Fenway Park

I like to talk, so I had the chance to talk to lots of people wearing Red Sox attire yesterday (I'd only call about a third of them actual fans), and they all said things like "I have family in Boston", or "I remember Spike Owen", or some such gabbledygook.

I didn't cuss at them (I mean, I wasn't any more foul mouthed than I already am), but I would always end up preaching the virtues of sticking with your team through the tough times and watching them grow into champions as opposed to latching onto whatever store bought team comes into vogue every few years.

It was fun. They weren't as fun to talk to as Cards fans (my favorite fans of another team), but they were much nicer than Cubs fans (who I only say horrible things to).

It totally reminds of going to see the Reds V. Braves in the nineties.
